As I continue speaking with business owners throughout District 11, I am hearing a wide range of experiences about how today's economy is affecting them and the customers they serve.
Recently, I stopped by a small thrift store and spoke with the owner, they will remain anonymous, as will the name of the business. While sales have remained steady and have even improved compared to previous years, the owner believes that this reflects a growing trend: families are becoming more careful and deliberate with their spending.
The owner noted that many customers are new faces—people who may have never shopped at a thrift store before.
Here are 2 questions and responses from our conversation:
Question 1: Have you noticed any changes in the types of items customers are purchasing?
Absolutely. Customers seem much more focused on necessities and value than they were a few years ago. Families are looking for affordable clothing for growing children, household items, and everyday essentials. While people still enjoy finding unique treasures, many shoppers today are coming in with a specific purpose and a budget they are trying to stick to.
Question 2: What do you think is the biggest financial challenge facing families in our community right now?
From the conversations I have with customers, the biggest challenge is that everyday expenses seem to be adding up faster than paychecks. Young families, especially those with children, talk about the rising costs of groceries, housing, utilities, and childcare. Many are making difficult decisions about where to spend their money and are looking for ways to stretch every dollar further. That's one reason I believe we're seeing more people shop at thrift stores who may never have considered it before.
