While I am not running for WLCSD School Board this year, I am very happy to endorse the team of Class4WalledLake who are running to be your WLCSD School Board slate for Collaborative Leadership, Academic achievements, Student-centered policies for all, and Sensible stability. If you supported me in my race, I hope you will double your efforts for these amazing folks who will surely need your time and resources to win this fall. This is not a drill!

On September 12, 2022, two recently elected WLCSD board members nodded and smiled as the leader of the Great Schools Initiative (GSI) “soft” launched a rogue sex-ed opt-out program aimed to attack and erase LGBTQIA+ students/teachers from MI schools while burying districts under lawsuits at the taxpayers’ expense. Since the beginning of 2023 there has been an increased push to inundate schools with these rogue opt-out forms, and several WLCSD schools have already received these forms. While the forms have no legal backing under Michigan law, they can still draw costly and time-consuming lawsuits to the district who will have no choice but to fight them, or change entire curriculums or policies to submit to these extremists’ demands.

Below is a summary of this latest attack against our schools and our LGBTQIA+ community. If you would like to message me personally I will send you the link to the full training video that GSI put out as well as the video that shows the school board members in direct contact with this organization. I will NOT post them on social media, as I refuse to give more publication to these deplorable organizations and their unacceptable tactics.

Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend tonight’s WLCSD Board meeting. My whole family has COVID and we are staying home to keep our community healthy.

I want to take a moment to publicly thank Nancy van Leuwen, Chris Titus, and Denise Dunn for their service to our community, their dedication to our schools, and the compassion they show our students and staff. You will be missed and I do hope they all remain involved in the district.

I will always be thankful to all of you who gave your time, energy, and money to support this campaign. We worked our butts off (and wore our soles out), knocking on hundreds of doors, dropping off thousands of pamphlets, and reaching out to tens of thousands of our neighbors, but still came up short.

Shayna, Julie, and Christy: I do hope that you will consider the voices of all of the members of this community who didn’t support you when you make decisions in the future. We all deserve to be represented in our schools, especially those who have historically been left out of the conversation due to bigotry or apathy. That's the beauty of public education: we all come together from all walks of life and backgrounds and learn from each other, in turn broadening our horizons and strengthening the community. Public education that excludes or only works for a select few does everyone a disservice.

The work of our district continues. I am still committed to serving our schools, whatever form that might take, as well as every single member of our community that public education impacts. I take comfort and strength in the knowledge that everyone who supported this campaign will be right there with me.
