More than 80,000 pounds of food and personal care items were collected this past weekend as a result of a food drive conducted jointly by employees and members of the New Jersey State Police, the Troopers United Foundation, the Utility and Transportation Contractors Association, New Jersey Alliance for Action, the American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey, and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. The food was collected in the parking lot of the NJTA headquarters in Woodbridge and delivered to more than a dozen food banks and shelters around New Jersey in time for the holiday. The drive yielded 83 pallets of food and other items and cash contributions of more than $10,000. Thank you to all who participated!

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority will suspend cash collections at all toll locations on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway as of 10:00 p.m. today as a precaution against the spread of COVID-19. All tolls will be collected electronically.

If you have an E-ZPass tag in your vehicle, the process will not change. The equipment in the lane will read your E-ZPass tag, and the cost of the toll will be deducted from the balance in your account, as usual.

If you do not have an E-ZPass tag, the equipment in the lane will capture a photograph of the license plate on the vehicle you are driving, and an invoice for the cost of the toll will be mailed to the registered owner. You will be billed at the cash toll rate; no additional administrative fees will be charged.

Cash customers who do not want to be billed can open an E-ZPass account by calling the New Jersey E-ZPass Customer Service Center at 888-AUTO-TOLL (888-288-6865) or by visiting www.ezpassnj.com.

For those who need to be on the road, service areas on the Parkway and Turnpike remain open for fuel, food, and restrooms.

ADVISORY: The schedule of public hearings on the New Jersey Turnpike Authority’s proposed toll adjustment and capital program has been changed.

The hearing that had been scheduled for Ramapo College on Thursday, March 19, 2020, at 7 p.m. has been canceled.

The hearings at the Turnpike Authority headquarters in Woodbridge and at Camden County College will be held as scheduled. The hearing in Woodbridge will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2020. Attendees will be asked to adhere as closely as possible to social distancing guidance. That hearings will also be live streamed. Details on how to watch will be posted on the Turnpike Authority website (www.njta.com). The presentation will be recorded and available for viewing after the completion of the hearing. The Camden County College hearing will proceed as scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, in the Dennis Flyer Memorial Theater, Lincoln Hall, Jefferson Drive, Sicklerville, New Jersey.

In uncertain economic times, the Turnpike Authority does not want to delay consideration of a capital program expected to sustain tens of thousands of jobs in coming years. The hearing arrangements will allow that process to continue while protecting public health and without limiting public participation.

Because of these changes, the Turnpike Authority has extended the public comment period until 5 p.m. on April 3, 2020. Members of the public now have until that time to submit written comments about the proposal in order to have those comments become part of the hearing record. Comments can be sent by email to [email protected] or by mail or courier to Executive Director, New Jersey Turnpike Authority, 1 Turnpike Plaza, P.O. Box 5042, Woodbridge, NJ 07095.

The Turnpike Authority commissioners this week approved an agreement with Tesla that will increase the number of electric vehicle charging stations in Turnpike service areas from 20 to at least 76.

Tesla will double the number of Tesla superchargers in two service areas and install new ones in six other service areas.

This agreement will benefit all EV drivers who use the Turnpike, not just Tesla drivers. Tesla has agreed to add infrastructure other providers will be able to use to install at least 24 non-Tesla chargers.

“Today’s announcement builds on the momentum of legislation I signed into law last month establishing a 10-year, $300 million rebate program to incentivize electric vehicle ownership throughout the Garden State," said Governor Phil Murphy. "With this important addition to New Jersey’s renewable energy infrastructure, we are one step closer to achieving 100 percent clean energy by 2050.”

Here are two high-intensity construction cycles to be aware of when you're traveling on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway this weekend:

1. NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE
SOUTHBOUND WESTERN SPUR
SOUTH OF INTERCHANGE 15W

One southbound lane will be closed for miscellaneous bridge deck repairs, bridge deck panel replacement, and resurfacing.
The lane will close at 9 o'clock tonight and remain closed until 5 a.m. Monday. Southbound drivers could encounter delays between interchanges 16W and 15W during peak travel periods Saturday and Sunday. Consider using the Eastern Spur as an alternative.

2. GARDEN STATE PARKWAY
NORTHBOUND LOCAL ROADWAY
NEAR EXIT 117 IN HAZLET

One local lane of the northbound Garden State Parkway near exit 117 in Hazlet will be closed all weekend bridge deck repairs. A second northbound lane will be closed only during the overnight hours (8 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday; 8 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday; and 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday.) The work to be done includes milling, spall repairs, and deck panel replacement on the structure that carries the Parkway over the ramps to and from exit 117.

10/11/2019

Here are two weekend construction closures to watch out for:

One lane of the eastbound Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension of the Turnpike approaching the Interchange 14C Toll Plaza will be closed. The exit for Liberty Science Center (Communipaw Avenue) will also be closed ... drivers will be detoured to Interchange 14B or Christopher Columbus Drive. This closure will go into effect at 8 tonight and continue until 5 Monday morning. This closure is nearly identical to the one that was in place last weekend. The work is part of a major, three-year project to replace multiple bridge decks and make structural improvements on the Extension in the vicinity of Interchange 14C. The work includes the replacement of the pavement at the 14C toll plaza.

The left lane of the southbound Garden State Parkway in Bloomfield will be closed and the right and center lanes will be shifted so a contractor can make repairs to the bridge at milepost 149.2. The lane closing and shift will go into effect by 10 tonight and will be picked up by 5 Monday morning.

10/08/2019

COMMUTER ALERT: A tanker truck crashed on the southbound New Jersey Turnpike south of Interchange 9 this morning. Two lanes are closed on the inner and outer roadways. Cleanup and investigation will take several hours. Expect delays.

2 P.M .UPDATE: The cleanup is ongoing. The material in the tanker is being offloaded into a relief tanker. There are still significant delays approaching the crash site. The cleanup crew expects to have the site cleared and the lanes reopened before the p.m. rush begins.

4 P.M. UPDATE: The off-loading is complete, but the process took longer than anticipated. The cleanup will continue until well into the p.m. rush. Expect southbound delays in the vicinity of Interchange 9 through the evening.

5 P.M. UPDATE: The scene is clear. The left lane of the outer roadway and the right shoulder of the inner roadway will remain closed for guardrail repairs. There are delays on both roadways right now back to Interchange 10 (about 8 miles). Those are likely to last through the rush hour.
