This morning’s residential fire served as an important reminder of what makes an effective emergency response possible.

A REMINDER that rapid response matters.** Every second counts when lives and property are at risk.

A REMINDER that our Fire District must maintain the two engine companies we currently have in service, including one company made possible through FEMA’s SAFER grant program.

A REMINDER of the critical role our student and volunteer firefighters play in supporting our career firefighters and providing emergency response to our community.

This morning, all of these key elements worked together. Firefighters responded to a residential fire in the 300 block of Gatch Street, quickly evacuated the occupants, and rapidly extinguished a fire that had broken out on the second story.

Because of the coordinated response, the home’s main living areas remain intact and the occupants are safe.

Lives protected. Property saved. Community served.

Great work by every firefighter and responder who helped make this outcome possible.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Highway 211 near Milepost 1, between Cooley Road and the Pudding River, will be closed for several hours due to a motor vehicle accident.

Expect delay and please use alternate routes while first responders work to clear the scene.

Wildland fires don't just happen in forests—they can happen right here at home.

At 1:26 p.m. today, the Woodburn Fire District was dispatched to a high-risk grass fire in the Waconda area, located in the southern portion of our fire district. Due to rapidly developing fire conditions, the incident was upgraded to a second alarm. The fire burned an estimated 12 acres.

Firefighters from Woodburn Fire District Stations 21, 23, 24, and 25 responded, including our career firefighters, SAFER grant-funded firefighters, student volunteers, and volunteer firefighters. They were joined by our valued auto-aid partners from Keizer Fire District, Marion County Fire District No. 1, Hubbard Fire District, and Mt. Angel Fire District.

Working from multiple directions, crews quickly coordinated an aggressive attack to stop the fire's forward progress and prevent it from crossing Interstate 5, where it threatened to spread to the east side of the freeway. Thanks to their rapid response and coordinated efforts, firefighters successfully contained the fire before it could grow into an even larger incident.

No injuries were reported and the scene was cleared at 2:45 p.m.

As temperatures remain high and vegetation continues to dry out, now is the time to be extra vigilant. A single spark can quickly become a fast-moving wildfire. Help protect our community by avoiding activities that can ignite dry grass and brush.

Quick responses by our amazing firefighters makes a difference—but prevention is even better.

Woodburn Fire District is proud to support Oregon's statewide mutual aid system as several of our firefighters deploy to assist with active wildland fires across the state.

Assistant Chief Mike Corless, Engineer Firefighter Dan Agee, Lieutenant Alex Weninger, and Captain Jon Koenig have deployed to the East Evans Fire, located approximately 14 miles east of the Rogue River in Southern Oregon.

Engineer Firefighter Robb Gramzow has also deployed to the Rowe Creek Fire, approximately 110 miles south of Fossil, Oregon. This marks Robb's second conflagration deployment of the 2026 fire season, continuing his commitment to protecting Oregon communities.

Oregon's mutual aid and conflagration response system allows fire agencies from across the state to work together, sharing personnel and resources when local departments need additional support. These coordinated deployments help strengthen firefighting efforts, protect lives and property, and ensure communities impacted by wildland fires receive the assistance they need.

Oregonians love their greenery, and the natural beauty of our state is one of the many reasons we call it home.

However, yesterday afternoon's fire in west Woodburn serves as an important reminder that beautiful landscaping should also be fire-safe.

When Woodburn Fire District's Engine 21 arrived on scene, bushes along the street were on fire and flames were quickly spreading toward a home. Thanks to the quick response and aggressive actions of firefighters, the fire was extinguished before it could spread to the house.

Creating a defensible space around your home can make a significant difference in preventing vegetation fires from becoming structure fires. Trim trees and shrubs away from your home, remove dead vegetation, keep grass mowed, and clean leaves and debris from roofs and gutters.

A few hours of yard maintenance today can help protect your home, your family, and your neighborhood tomorrow.

As our nation prepares to celebrate Independence Day and the 250th anniversary of the United States, the Woodburn Fire District encourages everyone to enjoy the festivities while making 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆.

Fireworks are a cherished Fourth of July tradition, but they can quickly turn a celebration into an emergency when used improperly.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼:

• Purchase and use only fireworks that are legal in Oregon. Learn which fireworks are legal and find licensed retail vendors by visiting: https://www.oregon.gov/osfm/Pages/Fireworks

• Never allow young children to handle or ignite fireworks.

• Keep fireworks away from homes, garages, vehicles, dry grass,
shrubs, and other vegetation.

• Always have a charged garden hose, buckets of water, or a fire
extinguisher readily available.

• Completely soak used fireworks before disposing of them.

These safety reminders are especially important following a structure fire that occurred Tuesday evening, July 1, at 10:39 p.m., when Woodburn Fire District firefighters responded to a garage fire thought to be caused by fireworks. Fortunately, firefighters were able to quickly contain the fire to the garage and extinguish it before it spread into the home. While the damage was limited, the incident serves as a timely reminder of how rapidly fireworks can ignite a dangerous fire.

Historically, the Woodburn Fire District responds to four to five fireworks-related calls each Fourth of July. Several of these incidents have resulted in significant fires, placing lives and property at risk.

"We want everyone to enjoy this historic Independence Day celebration with family and friends," said Fire Chief Jim Walker. "By using only legal fireworks, following safety precautions, and staying aware of your surroundings, you can help ensure the holiday is memorable for all the right reasons."

Woodburn Fire Engine 21 and Tender 21 responded to a mutual aid structure fire this afternoon in the Hubbard Fire District.

The fire was reported by a passing motorist who noticed smoke coming from the residence and turned around to assist. The homeowners were not home at the time of the incident; however, firefighters were able to safely rescue the family’s three small dogs.

Crews quickly brought the fire under control and conducted a thorough search for fire extension to ensure the fire did not spread beyond the area or origin.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Woodburn Fire District Responds to High-Risk Grass Fire:

On June 3, 2026, Woodburn Fire District crews responded to a high-risk grass fire that originated from a legally permitted burn pile. Initial reports indicated that the fire was spreading into surrounding vegetation, creating the potential for rapid fire growth.

Responding units included Engine 23 from our Gervais Station, Engine 21, and Tender 21 from our Newberg Highway Station, along with a brush unit from Mount Angel Fire District.

Thanks to the quick response and coordinated efforts of all personnel involved, the fire was rapidly brought under control and contained within the original field, preventing further spread and damage.

Woodburn Fire District would like to remind the public that even after recent rainfall, light fuels such as dry grass can dry out quickly and become highly combustible. What may seem like safe burning conditions can change rapidly, allowing a fire to escape and spread unexpectedly.

Always monitor your burn continuously and never leave it unattended.

Congratulations to WFD's student residents Christopher Fitzpatrick and Alejandro Sandoval on completing their Fire Science degree programs and graduating from Chemeketa Community College on Friday.

Both Chris and Al will continue their education by enrolling in paramedic programs as they pursue their careers in the fire service. We are proud of their hard work, dedication, and commitment not only to the Woodburn Fire District but to the future of the fire service.
