Over the last weekend, members of our Patrol Division made 12 arrests for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII).

While I am grateful for the hard work and dedication of our officers in getting impaired drivers off the road, I am deeply troubled that we made this many DUII arrests in just one weekend. The sad reality is that there were likely other impaired drivers we did not encounter.

This is unacceptable because driving impaired is 100% preventable.

If you choose to drink, please make the responsible choice and do not drive. Call a friend or family member, use a taxi or rideshare service, or make arrangements for a safe ride home before you begin drinking.

In Oregon, the legal Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) limit is .08%, but you can still be arrested for DUII if you are impaired, even if your BAC is below the legal limit. If you find yourself questioning whether you are sober enough to drive, the answer is simple: don’t drive.

The consequences of driving impaired can be life-changing. They may include arrest, fines, jail, or prison time—and, most tragically, the possibility of seriously injuring or taking someone’s life.

Our officers will continue to actively look for impaired drivers and take enforcement action when necessary. This work is about protecting everyone who shares our roads—families, friends, neighbors, and every member of our community.

Please do the right thing. Think about the people around you and the lives that could be changed by one decision.

Don’t drink and drive. Plan ahead, get a safe ride home, and help us keep our community safe.

Increased Traffic Enforcement in School Zones

As the new school year begins, the Woodburn Police Department will be stepping up traffic safety enforcement in and around all Woodburn school zones from Monday, August 31 through Friday, September 11, 2026.

Officers will be watching for:
🚗 Speeding
🚌 Failing to stop for school buses
📵 Unlawful mobile device use
🚶 Crosswalk violations
🧷 Seatbelt violations
⚠️ Other unsafe driving behaviors

The goal is simple: help keep our students, school staff, families, and everyone traveling through our school zones safe.

📍 Remember: Woodburn school zones have a 20 MPH speed limit from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days, and violations are subject to enhanced fines.

Please slow down, stay alert, put the phone away, and give yourself extra time when driving through school zones.

Stay Focused. Slow Down. Protect Our Kids.

As students head back to school, remember that distracted driving is extremely dangerous in school zones. A moment of distraction can put children, pedestrians, crossing guards, and other road users at serious risk of injury or death.

Why Is Distracted Driving So Dangerous?
• Children can be unpredictable. They may dart into the street, run toward a bus, or emerge from between parked cars without looking.
• Afternoon dismissal is especially busy. Between 2–5 p.m., school zones can have heavy traffic, pedestrians, buses, and bicyclists—all of which require your full attention.
• A few seconds can make a difference. Looking down at your phone or multitasking can mean missing a child entering a crosswalk, a stopped school bus, or a sudden change in traffic.

Know the Law. Make Safety a Priority.
In Oregon, using a mobile electronic device while driving is prohibited under ORS 811.507. Additionally, moving violation fines are nearly doubled in school zones when the enhanced school-zone penalty applies.

When driving through a school zone:
• Put your phone away.
• Slow down and stay alert.
• Watch carefully for children and pedestrians.
• Stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.
• Follow school-bus and crossing-guard directions.
• Give yourself extra time—don't rush.

One distraction can change a life. Keep your eyes up, your phone down, and your attention on the road. Let's work together to keep our students safe!

Please join us in welcoming Officer Sarissa Scamahorn to the Woodburn Police Department!

Born and raised in Oregon, Officer Scamahorn has family roots in Woodburn. Before joining WPD, she completed the LERE program through Chemeketa Community College, earning her associate’s degree, and worked as a Security Officer at Salem Hospital.

She’s excited to begin her law enforcement career and hopes to become a K-9 handler or detective one day. Inspired by her family and their constant support, she’s ready to learn, grow, and connect with her fellow officers.

Officer Scamahorn will begin the DPSST Police Academy in September, with an expected graduation in February 2027.

Outside of work, she enjoys fishing, hiking, gardening, going to the gym, and watching movies.

With school starting next Monday, August 31, school zones will be active, and our streets will be busier with students, families, buses, walkers, and bicyclists.

Here’s what drivers need to know:

• School zones have a 20-mph statutory speed limit when designated by school-zone signs. Be sure to watch for the signs and follow the speed limit.
• Speeding in a school zone can result in enhanced penalties.
• Starting August 31, officers will begin enforcing school zone laws to help keep students and our community safe.

Slow down, stay alert, and watch for students crossing the street, school buses, and increased traffic around schools.

Fiesta Parade Street Closures – Tomorrow, Saturday!

The Fiesta Mexicana Parade is happening tomorrow, Saturday, August 22, at 11 a.m.!

If you're heading downtown or traveling through the area, please plan ahead. Temporary street closures and parking restrictions will be in place along the parade route and staging areas to help keep parade participants and spectators safe.

Parking restrictions will be in place along the parade route:

Vehicles left parked along the route during the restricted times may be subject to citation under Woodburn City Ordinance 2285.

Please plan ahead for upcoming railroad maintenance and Fiesta Mexicana activities.

• Young Street Crossing
The railroad crossing at Young Street will be CLOSED for a rail maintenance project from Friday, Aug. 21 at 8 p.m. through Sunday, Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. Please use alternate routes.

• Cleveland & Lincoln Street Crossings
The railroad crossings at Cleveland and Lincoln Streets will be CLOSED SATURDAY MORNING (8/22) DURING STAGING AND THE FIESTA PARADE ONLY. These crossings will reopen once the parade is over.

Celebrating Excellence at the Woodburn Police Department

Earlier today (8/18), we honored four exceptional members of our team whose dedication, courage, and service exemplify the best of law enforcement.

Achievement Medal Recipient
• Edith Santos Lucero - For outstanding leadership during a critical transition period in our Records Division, training new staff while maintaining operations and creating documentation that will benefit our department for years to come.

Life Saving Award Recipients
• Officer Arron Curry and Officer Tim Hart - For their swift, professional response on February 27, 2026, performing CPR that saved a community member's life during a cardiac emergency.
• Detective Matt Stearns - For extraordinary dedication between June 30th and July 6th, 2026, intervening during a su***de crisis, coordinating comprehensive care for a vulnerable crime victim.

Each of these individuals went above and beyond their duties to serve our community with integrity, empathy, and respect. We are proud to serve alongside them.
