It was another delicious Woodbury Middle School Chopped competition – Desserts edition. With today's half-day schedule and shortened class time, this 7th-grade class didn’t miss a beat, and the Region 14 Vision of a Learner attributes were on display. Students adjusted recipes and communicated and collaborated well with their teams to bring judges an amazing array of sweet treats. And on a particularly hot day, one group’s homemade ice cream was a wonderful surprise for the judges! Well done to the students in WMS Culinary and teacher Mike Hadoulis as they wrapped up their trimester of cooking with this popular in-school competition.

Elementary School students in Region 14 celebrated Social Studies Day this week with some terrific learning activities. First graders at BES used the book Roxaboxen to explore and create their own communities. They learned how communicating with their classmates improved their town. First graders at MES took a virtual trip back to 1776 to explore what life was like during the American Revolution. Students wrote about what they think life was like back then. Other classes created American Flags and learned about making connections between the past and present.

Agriscience students in Eric Birkenberger's Greenhouse classes designed beautiful sympathy floral arrangements for a mock funeral. Several florists visited NHS to help with the construction and instruction of these advanced-level arrangements. They are displayed in the Agriscience Conservatory. We love having industry professionals support our NHS community here at school, and in their SAE.

Fifth graders at Bethlehem Elementary School culminated their year-long DARE Education Program with a terrific graduation ceremony yesterday in the gym. The police officer-led series of classroom lessons teaches fifth graders how to resist peer pressure and live productive, drug and violence-free lives. Thank you to SRO Mark Cattey and Trooper Cody Fitzgerald, who have made such wonderful connections with our BES fifth grade through this program.

On Wednesday, Lindsay Zaborowski's fourth-grade class walked from Mitchell Elementary School to the Woodbury Senior Community Center to meet their pen pals. Students and local senior citizens wrote letters back and forth throughout the year. Students made a wonderful connection with members of a different generation in our community through their correspondence. Yesterday's visit was a great way to celebrate a very rewarding and heartwarming experience. Students enjoyed lunch, conversation, and sidewalk chalk drawings with their pen pals and even some hopscotch.

Katie Blake’s Video Production Class at Nonnewaug High School welcomed Doug Stewart, Digital Executive Producer for Connecticut’s FOX 61, this morning for a fantastic session. Students had the opportunity to get professional feedback on their work from Stewart, a veteran videographer and producer. Stewart offered students advice on areas including storytelling and concepts, pacing and flow of the pieces, audio clarity, and the use of lighting and visuals to frame the shots. Students will be able to use this valuable feedback to submit their stories for the annual FOX 61 Student News initiative. Thank you FOX 61 for supporting our students and the NHS Media Arts Department.

The weather was perfect this week for the Bike Week at Bethlehem Elementary School. PE teacher Tim Jackson set up a course on the blacktop for students to work on their cycling skills. Students also learn how to check bikes before riding and are reminded of the safety measures necessary for safe riding -- communicating turns and following street signs.
