New York City is—and always will be—a city for all immigrants. It is important that all New Yorkers, including undocumented immigrants, know their rights.

To educate our students and communities about their rights, promote safety, and empower young people, we wrote and published our Know Your Rights comic book together with the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs. The comic is available in 14 languages so that it will reach as many people as possible.

Thank you to my fellow panelists, Alex Segura (author of the Know Your Rights comic), Tamara Mair (Senior Director, Project Open Arms), and Commissioner Faiza N. Ali from the NYC Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs who spoke with me about the Know Your Rights comic book at New York Comic Con. And most of all, thank you to our community for reading.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

Latino culture is New York City culture. Our Latino communities are deeply woven into the fabric of our city, and I’m proud to say that this cultural footprint is also found throughout our schools—from our dual language programs to our Hidden Voices series.

Over 40% of our students identify as Latino, and our schools must be places where they can see their stories reflected in the classroom. Hidden Voices: Latines in US History highlights the contributions and impact of Latino leaders, scholars, cultural icons, and more. Our Hidden Voices curricular materials are available on weteachnyc.org for educators nationwide.

Thank you to the students of Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music, P.S. 178 Professor Juan Bosch Public School, P.S. 192 Jacob H. Schiff, Art and Design High School, and Bronx Dance Academy School for sharing your talents with us.
