On Tuesday, Virginia Department of Transportation leaders took a second look at plans for the Shenandoah valley rail trail project.

Weeks after the Battle of Cedar Creek, General Philip Sheridan's US army withdrew down the Shenandoah Valley and established winter camps near Wi******er. Evidently that winter's weather was similar to this year's, with frigid temperatures and high winds. A soldier with the 114th New York described the scene in a letter to his siblings.

"The weather has been very cold here for the last week and very good sleighing a portion of the time. It is more mild at present but is frozen up so that there is no mud to bother about getting about. I have very comfortable quarters at present & can keep very comfortable if I can get wood enough to burn which is a pretty scarce article about here & is growing more & more so each day. There has been no move here of late, the weather being too severe to admit of anything except doing picket duty which is very trying these cold nights. Many of the men freeze their feet & ears."

How are you staying warm this winter? ❄️

Shenandoah County has so much history — and this map captures it in one place. 🗺️✨

This 48” x 36” historic print depicts Shenandoah County as of 1980 and all points earlier, using information compiled from countless maps, including sources going back to before the Civil War. It’s packed with the details that make our area what it is: roads (past and present), waterways, topography, cemeteries, schools, mills, furnaces, and more — plus town and village insets and illustrated landmark notes around the margins.

Whether you’ve lived here forever or you’re new to the Valley, this is an incredible way to understand the places people mentioned — and a beautiful reminder of how the county has grown and changed.

During the Great Depression, President Roosevelt developed the Civilian Conservation Corp - the very first camp of which was set up in Fort Valley!

In this time of economic hardship, the CCC offered a way for young men to make a living while also protecting and preserving the beauty of the area - and what would eventually become Shenandoah National Park.

This photo shows Roosevelt visiting one of the first camps in Big Meadows along Skyline Drive.

Have you hiked Big Schloss? 🥾🌄

Perched on the Virginia/West Virginia border, Big Schloss offers one of the most stunning overlooks in Shenandoah County! Named by German settlers (Schloss translates to “castle”), the rocky outcropping at the top rewards hikers with breathtaking views.

The first overlook of the hike showcases the Stoney Creek, Millertown, and Columbia Furnace areas. Once you reach the summit, you'll be treated to a spectacular view of Upper Cove in Hardy County, West Virginia, along with stunning sights of Little Sluice and Paddy Mountains in Virginia.

Drop a photo if you've done this hike or let me know your favorite local trail! ⛰️
