Today we met with City of Worcester, Massachusetts City Manager Eric Batista, City of Worcester Health & Human Services Commissioner Dr. Seema Dixit, Worcester Police Department (Official)'s Chief Paul Saucier, and Worcester County Sheriff's Office Sheriff Lew Evangelidis to share ideas and brainstorm solutions to combat the opioid crisis and support Worcester's unhoused population. Our hope is that by working together on a community solution, we can make a greater impact and continue building a safer, healthier Worcester.

Last night, we recognized International Overdose Awareness Day with the City of Worcester, Massachusetts, Everyday Miracles Peer Recovery Community Center, SADOD, GAAMHA, Inc., Alyssa's Place: Peer Recovery and Resource Center, and many more at the Worcester and Gardner Vigils. We remember all those we have lost and work towards ending the stigma around this disease.

We were honored to join SADOD for their Worcester Red Sox International Overdose Awareness Day Remembrance Event. The evening began with a vigil honoring lives lost and those impacted, followed by a baseball game bringing people together in hope and resilience.

Today, we remember the unresolved case of Alje Savela. We ask the public if they have any information to please reach out. We know over time that relationships change, people’s feelings change, and witnesses may be more willing to come forward.

Patrolman (Trooper) Alje Savela was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop on Route 122 in Barre at approximately 8:20 p.m. on Aug. 31, 1951. Patrolman Savela was located by a local resident after he heard gunshots. Savela was found with multiple gunshot wounds and succumbed to his injuries. Patrolman Savela was a member of the Massachusetts State Police for approximately four years and was assigned to the Athol Barracks.

In August 1980, 61-year-old Eva Rosario, also known as Evaresta Manzano, was found deceased in a wooded area in Southbridge on the Dudley line. Rosario was last seen near the Southbridge Plaza. Rosario’s death was ruled a homicide.
