Happy Earth Day! The Governor’s Residence features multiple green features, all with the aim of promoting reduction, reuse and renewability. For example, these solar panels on the south-facing roof of the residence provide not only a source of clean electricity to the Residence but also an uninterrupted power supply of renewable energy for critical communications systems.

For more information on green features at the Residence, visit https://www.residence.pa.gov/The-Residence/Pages/Green-Features.aspx.

The Governor and First Lady are honored to partner with Moore College of Art and Design to curate a Pride Month exhibit at the Residence. This exhibition is a celebration of the Moore community and its commitment to providing a welcoming, engaging, and empowering environment for its students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the public. Current students were invited to submit work based on their identification with and respect for Pride Month and its meaning.

To further celebrate the freedom to love, the Residence hosted a Pride Month Reception alongside the Governor’s Commission on LGBTQ+ Affairs. We were thrilled our friends from Moore College could join us for the occasion.

Happy Independence Day!

As a symbol of our commitment to advancing real freedom for all, we are honored that portraits of James and Charlotte Forten hang at the Residence.

James Forten, a Revolutionary War veteran from Philly, and his wife Charlotte Vandine Forten spent their lives fighting for the abolition of slavery.

Together they helped build a robust community of free African Americans in early Philadelphia.

At the Museum of the American Revolution, the Governor and First Lady saw an exhibit featuring the lives of the Forten family and were inspired by their work to create a more just and free country.

A few weeks ago, the First Lady spent the day at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia to learn about their programs and how they support local artists. While on site she participated in a hands-on activity with Community Engagement Assistant, Nitza. Check out the final product!

The Clay Studio offers students, artists and the public the opportunity to join a welcoming community that allows people to express their creativity as a force for good.

The gardens at the Governor’s Residence are blooming! 🌼🤩 Roses, tomatoes, and lettuce are just some of the plants that are flourishing on the grounds. A yellow-crowned night heron, which can be found along the Susquehanna River during the spring and summer months, has also made an appearance. What are your favorite flowers and vegetables to grow in your garden?

💗💗💗 We were thrilled to host the PA Breast Cancer Coalition’s annual luncheon yesterday at the Residence along with the First Lady. Like every First Lady since 1993, First Lady Lori Shapiro will serve as the Coalition’s honorary board chair.

Supporting women is paramount to the Governor and First Lady. Earlier this month the Governor signed Act 1 of 2023, allowing Pennsylvanians at high risk to have access to:

✔️ No-cost breast MRI
✔️ No-cost breast ultrasound
✔️ No-cost genetic testing
✔️ No-cost genetic counseling

Last week, John and Rosemary Baer came by to see Nick Ruggieri's watercolor paintings before the exhibit returned to The State Museum of Pennsylvania.

Ruggieri, Rosemary's father, was the art director of PennLive.com when he embarked on a journey across Pennsylvania to capture the beauty of all 67 counties in honor of America's bicentennial.

You can check out similar work at the state museum.

This week, the executive director for the Pennsylvania Commission for Women came by to discuss priorities with First Lady Lori Shapiro and how they can work together to help address maternal health, period equity, child care, and paid family leave in Pennsylvania.

We're excited to see the Governor's initiatives to protect women and girls move forward.

We're now featuring watercolor paintings by Nick Ruggieri at the Governor's Residence.

The paintings on display are from a more extensive bicentennial collection by Ruggieri which captured scenes from all of Pennsylvania's 67 counties.

Each of the stoic watercolor paintings represents the cultural and historical heritage of the county through the eyes of Ruggieri.

This week, we hosted community leaders from across the Commonwealth to celebrate Black History Month.

Our guests included trailblazers such as Rep. Joanna McClinton, Pennsylvania’s first female speaker of the house, and renowned artist and songwriter Ashli Rice Music — who delivered an incredible performance.

We also marked the occasion with drinks prepared with Mishka Premium Vodka, the oldest operating Black-owned distillery in Pennsylvania and the nation.

Here's a sneak peek at some of the work we have on display in honor of Black History Month.

Last week, First Lady Lori Shapiro and the State Museum of Pennsylvania put up the profound, award-winning portfolio Voices of the Revolution by Edith Jaffy Kaplan, the first female art director of an American advertising agency.

Paired with poetry and historical quotes, Voices of the Revolution is both a reflection of the suffering, fear, and violence, and a commemoration of the hope, brotherhood, and courage of the Civil Rights Movement.
