BIG NEWS for Yakima 💦☀️

Last night, City Council voted 5–0 to:
✔️ Keep Lions Pool open through May
✔️ Repair Franklin Pool
✔️ Reopen it as soon as possible

💰 $230,000 has been set aside, and the community is already stepping up in a BIG way — with $40,000 raised in just 3 days toward the private fundraising goal.

This is what happens when a community shows up. 🙌

📅 The next step:
April 7th — final budget vote to make it official.

There’s still work to do, but this momentum matters. Let’s keep showing up, supporting, and making sure our pools stay open for everyone — especially our kids, families, and seniors. 💙

Lots of conversations are happening right now around the future of Lions Pool, and we’re grateful to see this moving forward.

Water safety and access matter for our entire community. From kids learning to swim, to families staying active, to seniors who rely on the pool for safe, low-impact exercise, this is about people.

If you care about Lions Pool, please show up tonight and be part of the conversation. Your voice matters.

We’re committed to continuing these conversations and advocating for solutions that keep Lions Pool accessible for everyone. Come tonight or stay tuned for an update.

Will you donate to open the pools this summer?

🚨 IMPORTANT: Yakima City Council Special Meeting – March 26 🚨

This Thursday at 6:00 PM, the City Council will meet to discuss a potential public-private partnership that could reopen our city pools.

This directly impacts our kids, our teams, and our community.

For so many families, these pools aren’t just summer fun—they’re:
• A safe place for kids to be active
• A foundation for swim teams
• A critical life skill (water safety matters)
• A gathering place for our community

If you care about keeping swim programs alive and giving our kids opportunities to grow, this is the moment to show up or speak up.

📍 City Hall – Council Chambers
⏰ 6:00 PM
💻 You can also attend virtually or submit public comment ahead of time

Let’s make sure our voices are heard.
Let’s fight for our kids.
Let’s Save the Lions.

SPECIAL MEETING: City Council meets 6 pm Thursday, March 26th, at City Hall to consider supporting a public-private partnership proposed by Yakima County legislators to reopen city pools.

Today and tomorrow, Lions Pool is hosting WIAA 2A Boys Districts.

This weekend brings swimmers, coaches, officials, and families from across the region together in one place, Yakima’s Lions Pool.

Hosting a meet like this matters. Families travel to Yakima, fill the stairs, stay in local hotels, eat at our restaurants, and spend the weekend here—and that wave is felt across the community.

Best of luck to all the swimmers racing over the next two days.

Yakima is cheering you on!

This weekend’s District Swim Championships at Lions Pool are making headlines and for good reason.

Hosting a meet like this brings athletes, families, coaches, and officials into Yakima. It fills our pool, supports local businesses, and shows what’s possible when our community has access to a functional, centralized aquatic facility.

Events like Districts don’t happen by accident. They happen because a pool exists that can handle this level of competition and because people continue to show up for it.

Take a moment to read and see why Lions Pool matters, not just for swimmers, but for Yakima as a whole.

Worth the read.
When communities lose pools, kids lose chances. Yakima still has one—and that choice is in front of us right now.

Sunnyside doesn’t have a pool — but they have a swim team. Yakima has a pool. But next year may not have any swim teams, Yakima's John Whitney writes.
