Connecting Nevada Producers, Researchers and Agricultural Partners

Earlier this month, University of Nevada, Reno Extension brought Nevada producers, researchers and agricultural partners together for a day-long field tour.

On September 2, our Extension Agriculture Educator, Dr. Andrew Waaswa, coordinated visits to Peri & Sons Farms in Yerington and Hillside Dairy, Frey Ranch and a local alfalfa operation in Fallon. Dr. Cho of NanoGraphene Fertilizer’s South Korea team learned about Nevada’s diverse production systems and discussed opportunities for future field-based evaluation.

New Mexico State University researchers working on the Resilient Agriculture, Water, and Community Systems project also collected soil samples from annual and perennial cropping systems to support research on soil health and water conservation in the Truckee-Carson watershed.

“Extension connects producers, researchers and agricultural partners around practical needs,” Waaswa said. “These visits supported field research while ensuring that Nevada producers’ experiences inform future collaboration.”

Extension participated in the 2026 Fallon Cantaloupe Festival & Country Fair Agriculture Experience.

During the Agriculture Experience, our team shared information about our current and ongoing agricultural programs and educational efforts supporting Nevada’s producers and communities. We also connected with festival participants, answered questions and highlighted resources available through University of Nevada, Reno Extension.

"A 2024 Extension study projects that this single lithium mining project will generate more than $1 billion per year in investment during its construction phase alone. Over the 40-year life of the project, average annual economic impacts during operations are projected to exceed $2.1 billion in statewide investment, alongside more than $148 million in personal income and more than 1,600 direct and indirect jobs annually. The project is also estimated to deliver more than $28 million in local and county taxes and more than $51 million in state taxes each year."

Nevada workforce partnerships and federal mining grants are securing America's domestic lithium supply chain and economic future.

What an incredible evening celebrating and connecting local producers, food business owners, and regional partners at our Clark County Extension office for our Southern Nevada Farm to Market Mixer.

This event brought together growers, emerging entrepreneurs, distributors, and supply chain specialists from across the state to build stronger connections within Nevada's local food economy. Attendees participated in speed networking, sampled local products, and explored new opportunities to scale regional agricultural operations.

Events like this highlight the resilience of our agricultural community and the importance of creating direct links across our food system. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, shared their work, and contributed to such a productive evening of networking and collaboration. What an absolute blast! The University of Nevada, Reno Lyon County Extension had the best time hanging out at Kids Day at the Park in Yerington last week! We got to team up with awesome kiddos and families from all over the map, diving into curious questions about 4-H and tackling some seriously cool STEM activities. A massive thank you to everyone who came out to play, explore, and laugh with us. Days like this are exactly why we love what we do—connecting with the incredible energy and smiling faces that make Yerington and Mason Valley so special! 🚀☀️

Northern Central 4‑H Camp is a weeklong summer adventure for all youth, not just 4-H club members, ages 9–12, held July 12–17 at Lake Tahoe 4‑H Camp. Kids spend their days exploring nature, building teamwork skills, solving challenges, and enjoying classic camp fun on the lake. It’s designed to help campers grow confidence, make friends, and experience the outdoors in a supportive, hands‑on environment. Cost is $350, with financial assistance available. Please join us!

The Home Horticulture Certificate Program is completely online through the University of Nevada, Reno Extension. The program includes pre-recorded lectures, reading, homework, and live Q & A sessions every Thursday from 12 - 1 p.m. with horticulture professionals.
