As we near the end of Historic Preservation Month, we want to recognize York’s very own Yorkville Historical Society. 🏦

The Yorkville Historical Society was founded in 1978 to help foster and promote historic preservation in York and the surrounding area.

Over the years, the organization has helped preserve and share the history that makes York so special through projects and educational efforts throughout the community. Their work has included publishing A Guide to Olde York: The White Rose Tour, supporting historical markers throughout York, partnering on the Victorian-style street signs in the historic district, and continuing to promote preservation efforts across the community.

Historic preservation is about more than preserving old buildings, it’s about preserving the character, stories, and identity of a community for future generations. Organizations like the Yorkville Historical Society help ensure those stories and pieces of York’s history continue to remain visible throughout our community.

🇺🇸 Today, Main Street York pauses to remember those who gave everything in service to our country.

Memorial Day is more than the start of summer — it is a day of reflection, gratitude, and remembrance for the men and women who never made it home.

We honor their sacrifice and hold their families close in our thoughts today. ❤️

👗 Small Business Spotlight: Sweet Southern Gals' Boutique 🛍️

This week, we’re highlighting JoAnne Fowler, owner of Sweet Southern Gals Boutique in downtown York.

For JoAnne, owning a boutique is about much more than clothing and accessories. Through her incubator-style boutique model, she helps support more than 30 local entrepreneurs, the majority women, by giving them a place to launch and grow their businesses.

Between managing two stores in York and Rock Hill, helping customers, mentoring vendors, and handling the day-to-day challenges of small business ownership, no two days are ever the same, but the passion behind it all is clear.

JoAnne explained that one of the biggest things people may not realize about owning a small business is that it never really turns off. Even after the store closes for the day, there is still planning, problem solving, and thinking about ways to continue growing the business. For many small business owners, their business becomes part of everyday life because they care so deeply about what they’ve built.

One of the most inspiring moments JoAnne talked about was watching one of her longtime jewelry vendors grow from selling inside the boutique to opening her own storefront in Charlotte, while still continuing to sell products inside Sweet Southern Gals Boutique.

She also reflected on how moving into their current location on downtown York’s “Boutique Row” became one of the biggest blessings for the business. What once felt like a difficult setback ultimately led to more visibility, more foot traffic, and more opportunities to support other small businesses.

What JoAnne loves most about downtown York is the sense of community. She said customers often become friends, conversations go beyond shopping, and people genuinely support one another. It’s that small-town connection and community feel that continues to make downtown York special to her. 💛

🏛️ Historic Preservation Month Building Spotlight 💛

One of downtown York’s most interesting historic landmarks is the Rose Hotel located on S. Congress Street.

Built in 1852, the Rose Hotel was once one of the most well-known hotels in the Upcountry and became part of York’s growth during the railroad era following the arrival of the Kings Mountain Railroad.

Over the years, the building witnessed some incredibly important moments in history during both the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. During the Civil War, families from Charleston came to York seeking safety, and after the war, the hotel even served as headquarters for Federal troops during Reconstruction efforts in York County.

Today, the building continues serving downtown as the Rose Apartments, a great example of how historic preservation can give new life to historic buildings while still preserving the character and stories that make York special.

Historic preservation helps keep York’s history visible, meaningful, and connected to everyday life in our downtown. 💛
