She had two degrees from her home country.
They told her to start over. She didn't.
When Marie arrived in Illinois from Congo, she had a university diploma in healthcare administration and seven years of hospital management experience.

The recruiter looked at her resume and said: "We can probably start you as a receptionist."

She came to one of our free Saturday workshops at the Yorkville Public Library. We didn't tell her to start over. We helped her translate what she already had.

Eight weeks later — she enrolled in a Medical Billing certification program at Waubonsee Community College. Fully funded through WIOA (a program most immigrants don't know they qualify for).

Twelve weeks after that — she was hired as a Medical Billing Specialist at a Chicagoland clinic. Starting at $21/hr. Benefits included.

Her degrees didn't stop at the border. They just needed a U.S.-shaped container.

That is exactly what I help people build.

Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Their commitment strengthens our programs, expands our reach, and allows us to better support immigrant families, refugees, and vulnerable communities working toward stability and self-sufficiency.

This week is not only a moment to celebrate, but also an opportunity to take action.

Together, we can build stronger, more connected communities by equipping individuals with the tools and support they need to succeed.

📋Are you interested in Career Development? Are you a new arrival in the US? Are you looking to land your dream job? Building a rewarding future by improving your skills in resume writing, interview navigating with ATS system? Job search? Your résumé is getting rejected before a human even reads it.

Most applications today are filtered by ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) — software that screens you out before a hiring manager sees your name. If you don't know how to write for ATS, you're invisible.

We built this series for exactly that.

🗓️ OCHA U.S. Workforce Integration Series

📍 Yorkville Public Library · Saturdays 2–4 PM · FREE

Over 6 sessions, you'll learn how to:

✅ Map realistic career paths in high-demand sectors like healthcare and skilled trades

✅ Write a résumé that clears ATS filters AND impresses a human reader

✅ Craft cover letters that get you in the room

✅ Search smarter on Indeed, LinkedIn, and major job boards

✅ Build a professional network — even starting from zero

✅ Walk into your interview ready — with mock interviews and real feedback

This is for immigrants, new arrivals, career changers, parents returning to work, and anyone who wants a real strategy — not just a list of job boards.

It's free. It's in person. Seats are limited.

Sustainable impact requires consistent commitment.

At the Organization for Citizens Humanitarian Assistance, we do more than provide temporary relief — we build long-term pathways to economic independence, educational opportunity, mental well-being, and legal stability for vulnerable families across Chicagoland.

By becoming a monthly donor, you create reliable support that allows us to plan, respond quickly to urgent needs, and expand services where they are most needed.
A recurring gift — whether $25, $50, or $100 per month — becomes a steady source of hope for families working to rebuild their lives.
