Quandary Ascent – A Topographical Memory

I made this piece for Micah for Christmas and it’s so special to us…this isn't just an abstract design; it’s a topographical map of Quandary Peak—the very first 14er we ever conquered! That gold line winding up through the center? That’s the exact path we hiked to reach the summit. 🥾✨

Do you have a "first summit," a favorite lake, or a special place that changed your life? I am now taking custom commissions!

I can create a 3D topographical map of any location, tailored to fit your specific home style and color palette. Let’s turn your favorite adventure into a piece of art.

We are so grateful and excited for this new park! Thanks to all those working on new campgrounds and trails. We appreciate you and can’t wait to visit ♥️♥️♥️

This new tribal national park in North Dakota blends deep cultural history with geological beauty. It’s land reclaimed by the Three Affiliated Tribes, now open to foot-traffic hiking with big potential for growth in trails and conservation.
Head to the comments for the full story and consider this off-the-map future hiking gem.

When you’re giving ✨cabin in the snow✨ but you’re just a 🚽vault toilet in the sand. 🚽

On their journey through White Sands National Park, a visitor captured this ethereal image: a lone vault toilet nestled among the gypsum dunes, its silhouette framed by a sky brushed in soft pinks and baby blue. The white sands stretch in every direction, and from their crest, the top of one of our famed vault toilets peeks out. Stoic, functional, and oddly picturesque.

What may appear to be a rustic cabin is, in fact, a vital piece of park infrastructure. The vertical pipes rising from the roof aren’t chimneys, they’re ventilation flues, designed to safely release contamination and minimize odors.

The humble vault toilet has long served as a cornerstone of backcountry sanitation across America's public lands. Developed as a modern solution to backcountry sanitation, vault toilets evolved from the early pit toilets introduced in the 20th century, simple structures designed to meet the growing needs of visitors while protecting fragile ecosystems from contamination.

Today’s vault toilets feature sealed underground chambers, passive ventilation systems, and accessible designs that serve both people and the place in which they reside in. They’re engineered to contain waste safely, reduce odors, and operate without the need for water or plumbing, making them ideal for remote and sensitive landscapes.

Inside, you’ll find a toilet seat perched above a sealed underground vault. You can do your business just like you would anywhere else. But please, only throw toilet paper into these toilets. No trash, wipes, or other items, as these can interfere with waste management and harm the environment.

So next time you see a vault toilet in the wild, give it a nod as it is keeping our lands beautiful one flush-less miracle at a time.
