In Meadview, there’s a cactus with pink flowers that looks like it got dressed for a desert gala and forgot it’s supposed to be a plant. While every other cactus is standing around in practical shades of “dust” and “slightly darker dust,” this show-off is waving bright pink blossoms like it’s accepting an award for Best Supporting Succulent. The local lizards seem unimpressed, the tumbleweeds keep rolling past without applause, and the cactus just stands there, covered in spikes and flowers, projecting the energy of a bouncer who secretly moonlights as a wedding decorator.

I took the school bus to Area 51 because the flyer said they needed a gardener and I figured extraterrestrials probably appreciate a well-maintained hedge. The bus driver did not ask questions, which felt either professional or deeply alarming. At the gate, a security guard wearing sunglasses at 2 a.m. handed me a rake that hummed softly and pointed toward a rose garden where every flower turned to stare when I walked by. My interview consisted of identifying which shrubs were invasive and which were senior staff. I accidentally complimented a cactus that turned out to be the regional manager. They offered me the position after I successfully watered a fern that had escaped gravity three times. The benefits package included dental, unlimited juice boxes, and one emergency teleport per fiscal quarter.

We drove 13 miles up a dirt road that looked less like a route and more like a dare issued by the desert itself. Every bump convinced us we were one rattlesnake away from uncovering intergalactic secrets, a hidden hangar, or at minimum an alien vending machine. The suspense grew with each mile until we finally reached the legendary Area 51 front gate… only to be greeted by a single warning sign radiating the enthusiasm of a tax form, and one unexpectedly adorable Joshua tree standing nearby like a tiny desert receptionist. After all that, the tree had more personality than the classified military installation.

Driving the Extraterrestrial Highway at 2 a.m., I passed a LOW FLYING AIRCRAFT sign and suddenly started checking the sky before changing lanes. Out there, it felt less like a warning and more like a traffic update for UFO commuters running late.

I drove home expecting the usual things: an empty driveway, maybe a forgotten takeaway receipt in the car, the slow ceremony of becoming indoor furniture. Instead, parked beside my front door, stood a giant alien waiting for me with the patient posture of someone who had arrived twenty minutes early to an appointment scheduled by destiny. On the extraterrestrial highway anything is possible, so apparently giant visitors can track your route better than GPS. I sat in the car pretending to check messages while wondering whether reverse gear counted as self preservation. The alien tapped on my window with one finger the size of a lamppost and held up a sign that read: SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, BUT YOUR PLANET WAS LISTED AS A REST STOP AND I’VE BEEN TRYING TO REACH YOU ABOUT YOUR STARSHIP’S EXTENDED WARRANTY.

I was cruising the Extraterrestrial Highway at a sensible warp speed when I met a giant alien named Colin, who was standing on the shoulder wearing a reflective vest the size of a tennis court and holding a sign that read: “CAUTION: SENTIENT FOG AHEAD.” Colin spoke in polite thunder and warned me that the next service station only accepted payment in fermented moon pebbles and unresolved regrets. We shared a thermos of suspiciously glowing tea before he vanished into a low orbit, reminding me: the cosmos is vast, weird, and full of creatures trying their best to get home before rush hour. This print is available on our Etsy shop. Be safe out there.

It was right at the start of Extraterrestrial Highway, where the sign still looks confident and the desert hasn’t fully committed to becoming strange yet, when I found a flying saucer parked on the shoulder with its hazard lights blinking in a deeply embarrassed rhythm. The saucer was tilted at an angle suggesting either a rough landing or an argument with gravity. A small alien stood beside it flipping through what looked suspiciously like an owner’s manual titled So You’ve Crashed Near Humans Again. Every few seconds he glanced up the road as if waiting for roadside assistance from a neighboring moon. When he saw me, he raised a glowing thumb and asked, in perfect English, if I happened to carry jumper cables compatible with “mid-range anti-gravity systems.” The desert went silent. Somewhere far away, a coyote laughed.

Meet the wallflower with survival skills. This pastel saguaro print was photographed in Tucson, where the desert treats sunlight like a full-time occupation. Soft colors, tall attitude, and the quiet confidence of something that’s lived through a century of weather without ever sending a single email. Hang it up if your space needs a little southwest daydream with a side of ancient cactus stubbornness.
