OFFICIAL FACEBOOK PAGE RECOVERED

In late December 2023, Nassau County’s official FaceBook page for the Board of County Commissioners was compromised and inaccessible to County staff. Despite diligent efforts from staff, including the County Attorney’s office, there was little progress. A temporary FaceBook page (this page) was created in the interim to continue sharing information with the community, however the Board of County Commissioners knew it was imperative that we regain access to the original FaceBook page with its 12,500+ followers to ensure information could get out to as many residents as possible, particularly as we head into the 2024 hurricane season.

Congressman Aaron Bean and his administrative team, joined our efforts to regain access to our original FaceBook page. And thanks to their hard work, the County regained access this yesterday!

We are grateful to Congressman Bean and his office for all their support as we worked to resolve this very important matter. A special thank you to Bryan Campbell for being our champion in pushing forward with this issue until it was finally resolved.

As a friendly reminder, the Board of County Commissioner’s official FaceBook page is as follows: https://www.facebook.com/nassaucountyfl

Please be sure to follow it.

COUNTY OFFICES CLOSED WEDNESDAY JUNE 19TH

Please be advised the County Offices will be closed on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 in observance of Juneteenth. This date commemorates the end of slavery in the United States following the Civil War.

In 1991, the Florida Legislature designated June 19 of each year as "Juneteenth Day" in recognition of the traditional observance that began in Texas. In 2021, the United States Congress passed Juneteenth National Independence Day, making Juneteenth a Federal holiday.

It's turtle nesting season! From May 1st - October 31st each year, sea turtles visit Amelia Island beaches to nest, and it's up to all of us to make their visit as safe as possible! During this turtle nesting season, we are introducing "Turtle Talk Tuesday". Every Tuesday, we will provide you with facts about our local turtle population and what is being done to protect them.

For today's Turtle Talk Tuesday, we wanted to share this video of a sea turtle excavation that took place in 2021. Every day, volunteers from the Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch walk the length of the beach looking for signs that a sea turtle has come ashore to nest. The nest is then located and roped off for protection. The volunteers return to the nest daily to check it and make sure it's okay. After the incubation period ends in about 50-60 days, they watch to see that eggs have hatched and within a few days, they return to the next to excavate it. This includes releasing any hatchlings that did not emerge from the next and counting egg shards (both hatched and unhatched).

If you've never been to a sea turtle excavation, you're missing out! Visit the Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch webpage to locate an excavation schedule.

Nassau County staff, in partnership with the North Florida Land Trust, has been busy working towards land acquisition for the Conservation Land Acquisition Management (CLAM) Program. This includes two properties within the Lofton Creek Watershed that were ranked in the top 15 CLAM priority projects. These properties are important because they offer protection to Lofton Creek, an Outstanding Florida Water, and to the headwaters and marshes of the Nassau River-St. Johns River Marshes Aquatic Preserve.

As part of the due diligence process, Director of Strategic Advancement Brandy Carvalho, representatives from the North Florida Land Trust, District Three Commissioner Jeff Gray, and the property owners participated in the appraisal site visits. Should the County move forward with acquisition, the properties would be designated as conservation lands in accordance with the adopted CLAM Manual & Conservation Plan adopted in January 2021. Potential public benefits of acquiring these properties include minimizing future storm surge and flooding vulnerabilities and the provision of recreational opportunities in the form of kayak launches, viewing platforms and trails.

All CLAM related documents including the meeting schedule, adopted CLAM Manual & Conservation Plan, nomination forms, priority projects list, CLAM Resource Ranking Map, meeting agendas and minutes, and more can be found here. The CLAM Committee is an advisory committee to the Board of County Commissioners and has no final approval authority. Its role is to review the programmatic details of the CLAM Program and make recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners as a committee of expert advisors. The Board of County Commissioners maintains authority to make all final decisions of the ex*****on of potential acquisitions.

If you have any questions, please contact Brandy Carvalho at (904) 530-6019 or via email at [email protected]
