“Stranger danger” isn’t enough.

Children don’t just need to know to avoid strangers — they need to know that unsafe behaviour can come from someone they know, like, or trust. Research shows that most children who experience sexual abuse are harmed by a known person, not a stranger.

That’s why body safety conversations matter.

Teach children:
Their body belongs to them.
They can say no to unwanted touch.
They never have to keep secrets about touching.
They can tell a trusted adult if something feels wrong.
They should keep telling until someone listens.

These conversations do not scare children — they protect them. They give children words, confidence and permission to speak up.

Every child deserves to know that being polite is never more important than feeling safe.

Round 2 of Safety Town 2026 with the CARR Center!

It’s such a blessing to be part of these conversations with our youngest learners. One of the most important messages we share is shifting the conversation from “stranger danger” to recognizing unsafe or strange behaviors. The reality is that most children who experience abuse are harmed by someone they know and trust, not a stranger.

I’m especially grateful to share this message through my own children’s book, You Can Say No. This is my “why” behind social work: helping children build the language, confidence, and understanding that their body belongs to them, their voice matters, and it’s always okay to say “no” to touch that makes them feel uncomfortable and to tell a trusted adult.

Every conversation matters. Every child deserves to know they have a voice. 💙📚

📚 Book Update 🩷

After Ohio University Eastern’s “Day in the Life of a Social Worker” Event where I was honored to share my “Why” and life journey throughout this career path. I felt inspired to update the ending of my book, You Can Say No, to place even more emphasis on an important message: youth can say no to adults when something feels wrong.

This message is deeply personal and part of my passion — making sure youth feel seen, heard, and empowered to have agency and autonomy over their own bodies, while also helping them identify the safe and trusted adults in their lives.

It means so much to know this book has touched so many people and has felt worthy enough to be shared with others. Every conversation, every family, every classroom, and every safe adult who uses this message helps strengthen the voices of children.

As we honor Child Abuse Awareness Month, thank you for continuing to support safe voices, body boundaries, and youth empowerment.
