"Interweaving with Water in Hsinchu"

A gathering that invites us to reconsider Hsinchu—often imagined as a high-tech city—through the flow of water and the relations it shapes. Centered on Nanliao, Xiangshan’s coastal areas, and the Touqian River, the program reveals another landscape of Hsinchu, where water, mobility, labor, migration, habitation, and collective memory are intricately interwoven.

With the participation of the Fengdong Zhuqian Cultural Association, Livelyland Design, the Taiwan Clean Water Action Union, and leaders and captains from the Naruwan Cultural Cluster, the gathering brings together diverse stories of boatbuilding, fishing, ocean culture, water advocacy, migration, and settlement.

Building on Sunyoung Oh’s preliminary research conducted in 2025, the program unfolds through conversations with local artists, researchers, and activists, opening a space for artistic co-creation.

"Incomplete Collaboration: Asymmetrical Responsibility in Art and Society" examines the gap between the idealized language of collaboration and the uneven realities in which it is actually lived. Although collaboration is often described in terms of mutuality, generosity, and hope, in practice it unfolds under unequal conditions. Participants do not begin from the same position, assume the same burdens, or remain affected in the same way. Some carry greater responsibility, some remain implicated for longer, and some continue to live with the consequences long after a project has formally ended.

Challenging idealized accounts of working together, this book reflects on what collaboration means under unstable and unequal conditions, and on the responsibilities that persist beyond the visible frame of the work.

In North Jakarta, we are collaborating with Irwan Ahmett and Tita Salina to engage with their long-term artistic and social practices rooted in coastal communities.

Through shared experiences, conversations, and collaborative research, we explore how art, community, and environmental realities—such as sea level rise and land subsidence—intersect along the changing shoreline.

This exchange is part of the Song of the Wind project, reflecting on the relationship between art and society across different places and contexts.

The process and outcomes of this collaboration will be documented in a forthcoming Song of the Wind publication.

Notes between Light, Rhythm, and Breath: Beyond the Tension and Desire of the City

Notes between Light, Rhythm, and Breath examines the 2025 Jiugang Island research phase of the transnational socially collaborative art project Song of the Wind (2022–2025). Through sensory-based field methods, ecological attunement, and collaborative workshops with local residents and artists, this volume explores how the rhythms of place—urban acceleration, ecological fragility, and everyday temporalities—shape conditions for co-sensing and collective imagination.

Bringing together rhythmanalysis, STS perspectives, and techno-sensory experimentation, the contributors conceptualise art as an ethical practice of “incomplete rhythms,” where collaboration does not depend on consensus but emerges from relational attention, uncertainty, and the micro-adjustments that occur between bodies, technologies, and environments.
Expanding the discourse of socially engaged art, this book proposes an ecology of listening, participation, and situated aesthetic inquiry—repositioning sensory collaboration as a vital method for understanding socio-ecological entanglements today.

Hyphen Journal Issue 4 is online!
https://hy-phen.space/journal/issue-4/

This issue brings together seven contributions drawn from the ongoing transnational socially collaborative art project Song of the Wind (2022–2025), which connects South Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Taiwan.

The project engages with the intertwined conditions of decolonial thought, ecological transition, and post-industrial transformation in contemporary Asia. Through site-based artistic research, it explores how art can attune to unstable rhythms and reconfigure the ethical and sensorial grounds of collaboration across different social and ecological contexts.

Rather than seeking resolution or harmony, Song of the Wind invites us to dwell within incomplete, dissonant, and interdependent rhythms that shape the shared realities of our time — where artistic practice becomes a mode of sensing, listening, and responding to the fragile entanglements of place, community, and environment.
