🌿✨ Cohort 2 Underway – Strengthening Nutrition & Resilience in Freshwater! ✨🌿

The momentum continues this week as Cohort 2 of the 2026 Food & Nutrition Training gets underway with Freshwater area beneficiaries of Port Vila!

Following the successful completion of Cohort 1 (Mele to Tagabe/Manples), beneficiaries from Freshwater are now building their knowledge and practical skills in nutrition, healthy food preparation, and maximizing the use of locally grown produce.

This training goes beyond the kitchen. 🍠🥬

It directly strengthens the link between:
🌱 Vertical backyard gardening – growing diverse, nutritious crops at home
🥥 Food processing & preservation – reducing waste and adding value
💼 Home-based micro-enterprise – creating income opportunities from surplus production

By connecting nutrition awareness with production and value-adding skills, the program is helping urban and peri-urban households build stronger, more self-reliant livelihoods — improving both health and economic resilience.

👏 We once again acknowledge the leadership of the Department of Agriculture & Rural Development (DARD) and thank Wan Smol Bag (WSB) for their continued support as Nutrition Training Service Provider to the DARD.

Stronger gardens. Healthier families. More resilient communities. 🌿✨

🌿✨ 2026 Project Activities Officially Underway! ✨🌿

We are pleased to share the commencement of key 2026 activities through the Department of Agriculture & Rural Development (DARD), marking another important step in strengthening food security and community resilience.

Last week, Wan Smol Bag (WSB) began delivering Food & Nutrition Training to project beneficiaries in Port Vila. Participants from Mele to Tagabe/Manples formed Cohort 1, successfully completing the first round of training.

This initiative is helping beneficiaries deepen their understanding of nutrition, healthy food preparation, and the value of locally grown produce — reinforcing the link between backyard production, food processing, and improved household wellbeing.

👏 We acknowledge DARD’s leadership in driving this important work and extend our appreciation to Wan Smol Bag for its dedicated support as the Nutrition Training Service Provider.

More cohorts to follow — building healthier families and stronger communities, one training at a time! 🌱🥥🍠

🌱 DARD Planning for Sustainability Beyond the Project 🌱

As part of the COVID-19 Response for Affected Poor & Vulnerable Groups Project, planning is underway to ensure that Vertical Backyard Gardening initiatives continue to deliver long-term benefits beyond the life of the project.

Through the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), consultations were held in December 2025 with the Department of Livestock to explore practical pathways for integrated urban backyard systems for project beneficiaries in Port Vila and Luganville.

These discussions focused on identifying sustainable backyard integration options, including approaches that combine vertical gardening with small-scale livestock and food production activities. The aim is to add value, strengthen household food security, and provide continuity to both the vertical backyard gardening and food processing initiatives supported under the project.

By strengthening linkages across departments and building on skills already developed by beneficiaries, these sustainability initiatives seek to ensure that urban and peri urban communities are well-positioned to grow, process, and sustain food production over the long term.

👍👏 Tankyu tumas DARD for working strategically to turn short-term support into lasting impact.💪

✨ Welcome to 2026! Another Year of Growth, Skills, and Community Empowerment ✨

As we begin the new year, we are proud to reflect on the 2025 achievements of the COVID-19 Response for Affected Poor & Vulnerable Groups Project—a journey marked by community strength, skills development, and meaningful impact across Port Vila and Luganville.

🌱 Growing Food Security and Nutrition – DARD
In Luganville and Port Vila, families now enjoy Vertical Backyard Gardens, producing fresh, nutritious food at home to strengthen food security and resilience. Alongside this, we partnered with Wan Smol Bag to deliver Nutrition Trainings that supported healthier diets and empowered communities with practical knowledge.

🍍 Skills, Enterprise & Market Activation – DoI
Under the Department of Industry (DoI), 2025’s activities helped spur local enterprise and economic activation:

🔹 Food Processing, Preservation & Packaging Trainings in both Port Vila and Luganville, giving participants the tools to add value to local produce and enhance market readiness.

🔹 Market Activation initiatives that connected local producers with consumers in vibrant commercial spaces.

⭐ A major highlight was the Vanuatu Made Events in both centers—celebrating the creativity and products of local makers—with a special award presented at the Port Vila event for outstanding Vanuatu Made success.

🔹 Business & Entrepreneurship Trainings delivered in both Port Vila and Luganville equipped aspiring entrepreneurs with essential business skills to start and grow their ventures.

💪 Empowering Communities & Promoting Respect – DoWA
Under the Department of Women’s Affairs (DoWA), our partners supported critical awareness and empowerment work:

🔹 Save the Children delivered vital community trainings focused on respect, equality, and healthy relationships.

🎬 In partnership with Wan Smol Bag Theatre, a powerful short film titled Wan Haos Blong Lav was produced as part of the youth-led Yut Rise Up initiative. This locally produced film uses storytelling to open conversations around gender-based violence, respect, equality, and healthy relationships—giving youth and families an authentic voice and prompting important dialogue across communities.

👏 Thank you to all beneficiaries, Government lead agencies, and partners who contributed to these amazing achievements in 2025. Your energy, creativity, and commitment continue to strengthen resilience, foster opportunity, and inspire positive change.

Building Soil & Plant Health Expertise to Strengthen Food Security 🌱👩‍🌾

The Department of Agriculture & Rural Development (DARD), in partnership with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), successfully delivered a Soil & Plant Doctors Training at the Vanuatu Agriculture Research and Training Center (VARTC) in Santo. The training brought together Extension Officers, specialists, and technical officers from SANMA and SHEFA Provinces to enhance local capacity in soil health assessment, crop pest and disease identification, and farmer advisory services.

Importantly, DARD’s COVID-19 Response for Affected Poor & Vulnerable Groups Project team was included, ensuring that these strengthened technical skills will directly support the delivery of Vertical Backyard Gardening activities under the project in Luganville and Port Vila.

👏 Congratulations to all participants, and kudos to DARD and SPC for this impactful partnership advancing resilient, productive, and sustainable agriculture in Vanuatu!
