We’d like to say a very big thank you to a few very kind members of public who have dropped by some wonderful homemade goodies for the crew here at Bohemia Road🚒
Of course we cannot officially endorse anything… all we can say, is the baked goods have been thoroughly taste tested by the crew and given a gold star😍😉🧁

‘What’s that’ Wednesday👀
Our e-draulic cutters ✂️
They weigh 19kg, and are battery operated, meaning they’re a lot lighter and quieter than their hydraulic petrol powered predecessors 🔋
They operate at a pressure of 720 bar (to give that some perspective, normal atmospheric pressure is 1 bar)💭
And have a cutting force of up to 77,906 kilograms-force (again, for perspective, it takes about 1 kilograms-force to cut through a piece of paper with a pair of scissors ✂️)
So as you can see, they make light work of various parts of a car 🚗
What would you like to see next?👀

The Cold Health alert level has been upgraded to amber until Friday 12 January❄️
Heat your home to at least 18 degrees, have plenty of warm food & drinks and check on elderly neighbours & friends.
If you are struggling to stay warm, contact us for a free Home Fire Safety visit, as we can help signpost to agencies to provide support, and in some cases issue our ‘winter warm packs’, providing resources for instant relief from the cold weather 🧤🧣
Also please take extra caution on the roads🚗

‘What’s that’ Wednesday👀
This week, we thought we’d introduce the Halligan bar, which we commonly refer to as a ‘Hooly bar’ (short for hooligan, seeing as it can be a great tool for breaking in to lots of things 🔨). It’s a multipurpose tool for prying, twisting, punching, or striking. It consists of a claw (or fork), a blade (wedge), and a tapered pick, which is especially useful in quickly breaching many types of locked doors.

The Halligan bar was designed by New York City Fire Department (FDNY) First Deputy Chief Hugh Halligan in 1948 and was named after him.

Can anyone notice what’s missing from this ceiling?👀
This is your reminder that if your smoke alarm starts beeping, don’t just take it down! Call us and we can come and fit a replacement free of charge🚒
Thankfully the occupiers of this house did all get out safely, but had they have had a working smoke alarm in situ, they would have been alerted sooner, and the damage may not have been so bad!

This morning we attended a single car RTC, alongside an appliance from Battle Community Fire Station and our colleagues in South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust and Sussex Police. Thankfully the driver of the car came away un-injured. We thought we’d take the opportunity to show you different methods of extrication we use- on arrival at scene, the officer in charge assessed the situation, and came up with an ‘A & B plan’- the A plan was a full roof removal, the B plan removal of the boot and windscreen. We carry out the B plan first, so that we can have instant access, and have a quick option should the casualties condition deteriorate. The ‘A Plan’ is for a less time critical, and ‘gold standard’ slower time removal. In this case, once we had executed the B plan, our overall plan changed, as with group decision making with SECAMB, it was decided that due to the casualty being in such a stable condition, she would be able to climb out the front windscreen with assistance from us.

‘What’s that’ Wednesday👀
The door enforcer (sometimes referred to as a universal key 🔑 as it opens any door with ease)
It‘s a pretty tough bit of kit, weighing 16kg.
It allows us immediate access into a property, and is used in a variety of incidents, including, but not limited to, gaining entry for the ambulance🚑

This morning we attended an RTC (Road Traffic Collision) in Pett, alongside a crew from The Ridge. Thankfully all occupants were okay, and we wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone to be very careful out on the roads in these colder temperatures❄️ Thankfully the driver of this vehicle was at a fairly low speed at the time, but they couldn’t avoid ending up in this predicament after hitting black ice 🧊

It is extra important in these conditions to keep a good eye on the health of your car and tyres 🛞
Consider shaving off some speed, and taking extra precaution on the less major roads that haven’t been gritted.

Please always remember, drive to arrive 🚒

‘What’s that’ Wednesday👀🚒
As promised, every week, we will be explaining a different piece of equipment that we carry on our Fire Engine 🚒

This week, we wanted to introduce something that a lot of people don’t realise we carry- pet oxygen masks! 🐾 These are generously funded and supplied to us by the RSPCA. We carry 3 different size masks, to ensure we have something for all fury friends great and small🐶🐱🐭 we have even used them on a squirrel before 🐿️

Let us know in the comments if this is something you knew we carried, or if this is a bit of a surprise! Also, we’d love to hear your ideas of what to do next🚒

‘What’s that’ Wednesday’s- keep an eye out every Wednesday when we’ll be showing you all the different bits of equipment we have. But to start, it’s only right we properly introduce the vehicles we have here at Bohemia Road🚒

Of course there’s our fire engine (known to us as an ERP- Extended Rescue Pump) - this can carry up to 6 crew members, 1,600 litres of water and 200 litres of foam concentrate, and is filled with various pieces of equipment to enable us to deal with a vast range of incidents- think of a giant tool box on wheels 🚒

And our aerial ladder platform (commonly referred to as an ALP). This has a working height of 37m and a cage load of up to 500 kg, which allows us to rescue up to 4 people at a time (allowing for one of us to be with them)🚒

Any suggestions as to bits of equipment you’d love to hear more about, or are particularly intrigued by, let us know, and keep an eye out for more posts🚒
