Great success!

A big thanks to Predator Free New Zealand Trust and NMIT for running the predator trapping methods course at the Manawahe Eco Trust headquarters.

It was a jam packed two day course full of practical learning, ensuring our rangers, Sentinel Ā Nuku cadets, HALO Whakatane cadets and community members walk away with the right skills and knowledge to confidently manage their own pest control programmes.

Shout out to Jo Ritchie and Ivan Rogers for being amazing tutors 👏

Happy World Ranger Day!
Being able to acknowledge Rangers across Aotearoa and the World is very humbling.
Our programme enables whānau, hapu and iwi to explore and navigate Taiao mahi, and we would love to spend this day acknowledging the various kaimahi in our diverse team!

Today we have Shannon, a Kaitiaki Ranger based in the Turanganui-ā-Kiwa Office, having a korero about her journey in te Taiao mahi.

Last week the SĀN whānau attended our first Wānanga. We would like to thank everyone that made this week happen:
- Kahungunu for hosting us at Pukemokimoki Marae,
- Our Ngā Whenua Rāhui whānau for supporting the kaupapa,
- The Department of Conservation HR & Health, Safety and Wellbeing staff,
- Te Ngahere & Cape Sanctuary for putting on a beautiful day at the Sanctuary, as well as
- Allan Munn for his continued support in the kaupapa, &
- Rob McGowan / Pa Ropata for his matauranga in rongoa.

Here is a kōrero from Nicole Hunt, a Kaitiaki Ranger based in the Whakatane office.

This month our SĀN rōpū from across the motu travelled to Pukemokimoki Marae in Ahuriri for our Wānanga Tuatahi. Over three busy days we listened to a wide range of kōrero to build foundational knowledge for the mahi ahead.

One of my highlights was listening to mātauranga generously shared by Pa Ropata. He ultimately reminded us that Papatūānuku is a tipuna, not a resource and that our wellness depends on hers. I also appreciated kōrero from Jenny Nelson-Smith who put into perspective that iwi, hapū and whānau are tuākana within the conservation space.

During the wānanga we also travelled out to Cape Sanctuary on the coastline of Heretaunga. Guided by kōrero from Levi Walford of Te Ngahere, we traced the whakapapa of Kahungunu and several pā sites around the area, as well as learned about the conservation efforts being made there. We were visited by takahē, wētā and all sorts of other native species on a flourishing piece of whenua high above sea level. Levi’s wealth of knowledge about his whakapapa and whenua reaffirmed my aspirations of learning the whakapapa of my whānau, whenua and wai, with the purpose of eventually being able to pass that knowledge on.

I hope my journey with SĀN weaves a pathway that will lead me to connecting and working alongside many of you. I’m grateful for this kaupapa and the opportunities it has the potential to bring to life for many of us.
