Spring 2012
UC Merced Students for Liberty is an open group created for students of UC Merced, Merced College, and the surrounding Merced community -- everyone welcome regardless of s*x, race, religion or lack of religion, or political affiliation! This group was founded by UC Merced students for the purpose of promoting the ideas of political, economic, social, and personal liberty on our campu
s. Our members hold a diverse body of beliefs and act as advocates of liberty in their own unique ways. We are, however, unified by a belief in the importance of the non-aggression principle in politics and social relations (i.e. "Live and Let Live" in the deepest sense), personal responsibility and rationality. Some of the valuable services we hope to provide to the community at large:
- Aiding in education by providing a open forum for political and philosophic discussion
- Mobilizing activists for political campaigns and initiatives which advance the cause of liberty. Encouraging non-violent civil disobedience of unjust laws, thoughtful protest and non-electoral activism.
- Bringing public awareness to key U.S. and global conflicts and injustices.
- Striving for economic sustainability and efficient club management. Engaging in fund-raising and charity works.
- Fostering an understanding and appreciation of voluntary markets, industriousness and entrepreneurship! THANK YOU FOR VISITING -- STAY ACTIVE & STAY FREE!

"What is Libertarianism?"
Here's a great introduction to the ideas of liberty by David Boaz, Executive Vice Prez. of the Cato Institute -- some food for thought: http://youtu.be/pPlMhvCGxl4

Honduras has singed deal to give land to private investors for creation of complete private cities.
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) -- The government of Honduras has signed a deal to hand over land to private investors for the construction of three privately run cities with their own legal and tax systems.
"A new RNC rule would have allowed presidential candidates to vet and choose their own delegates, leaving state parties out of the selection process. This angered many grass root party activists, like Ron Paul supporters, because it would limit their ability to gain delegates at future conventions. "
At a crucial time for GOP unity, there has been some dissent at the Republican National convention over new rules for delegate selection.
PLEASE SHARE. Free Market Austrian School economist Robert Murphy is challenging Economist Paul Krugman to a debate. If the debate occurs, all the money pledged by supporters, which has now reached $75,000 will be donated to a New York charity!
Welcome to KrugmanDebate.com, your headquarters for the Murphy-Krugman Debate! Robert Murphy has a PhD in economics from New York University. He is a firm believer in the Austrian theory of the business cycle, which blames the boom-bust cycle on the Federal Reserve, not the free market. In contrast,...

A brilliant article about patents, how they hindered innovation with the steam engine and how patents affect the software industry
Many economists are in love with the idea of a natural experiment. A natural experiment is a turn of events that enables a clean comparison between two different economic-policy alternatives. For many economic policies we do not have the good fortune
"Our government teaches people by example. If the government becomes the lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy."
-Louis Brandeis
accurate?
No amount of quantitative easing, stimulus packages, subsidies, or other forms of government intervention can restore the economy the way that the free market can . . . Obama would be smart to learn that, maybe he can "evolve" his views of economics to embrace free market principles (Photo Credit: Drudge Report)
"If we remain silent when our popularly elected government violates the laws it has sworn to uphold and steals the freedoms we elected it to protect, we will have only ourselves to blame when Big Brother is everywhere"
F or the past few weeks, I have been writing in this column about the government’s use of drones and challenging their constitutionality on Fox News Channel, where I work. I once asked on air what Thomas Jefferson would have done if - had they existed at the time - King George III had sent drones to...

Now this is activism. Remember when your parents told you could do anything with your life when you grew up? Well, according to many Americans and many SacBee readers, you can't not pay your taxes... even if you think the institutions who collect them contribute to the death of millions.

A Sacramento judge said Thursday he will rule June 4 on an attempt by federal tax collectors to force well-known anti-war activist Cindy Lee Sheehan to produce financial records and answer questions regarding her failure to pay taxes.

An April Fools Day gift from the folks at the Free State Project in New Hampshire:
http://freelunchproject.com/
Are you frustrated at the loss of a free-ride and sense of entitlement in America, while the growth of government involvement and distribution of wealth stalls? Do you want to live in communities where your right to three meals a day and universal healthcare are respected? Do you want others to fun...
Big question in libertarianism: Should we be concerned about the historical injustices that have lead to unjust acquisitions of property and wealth disparity, as well as some sort of market/legal mechanism for addressing this disparity OR Is this entire endeavor impossible/unjust in itself?
Some other key questions brought up in the comments: What is the relationship between the individual and the group in terms of libertarian thought? In the same vein: what is the relationship groups of individuals/cultures in the past and their descendants? What is race and racism?
Great discussion going on over at Bleeding Heart Libertarian blog. Get involved!

Adam, a Native American, and George, an American of European descent, encounter each other on the street. Adam sees that George is carrying a shiny new Ipad 3. So Adam clubs George over the head with a stick and takes it. George: "Ow! Give that back!" Adam: "No." George: "But that's mine! You just ...
*** I'm posting this because one of my anarchist friends shared it. What do you think is more important: pointing out that Jenna Talackova "isn't a woman" and that this whole article is void of meaning to the libertarian, or that there is a unique business opportunity that is dying to be exploited... a service that welcomes the trans community and an opportunity to dispel ridiculous traditional cultural mores about gender. ***
Note to the culturally reactionary libertarians or the religious fundamentalist (Or anyone really):
1. Yeah, I realize the Beauties of Canada organization has a right to run their competition any way they want, considering it's their company. Jenna didn't follow their rules.
2. Yeah she's a woman. Even though "God" made her a man, she decided that she was a woman.
3. This story should get you thinking about how people could provide a better service (an internationally recognized beauty contest of some kind) that includes the trans community. That way you can attract a wider audience and make more $$$... that is, if you're actually an individualist and not interested in perpetuating archaic cultural norms about what a man and a woman should be. But maybe that's too "radical" and "leftist".
