Idaho is sending our inmates — and our money — out of state.

This year alone, overcrowding in Idaho's prisons is expected to cost $51 million in inmate transfer fees. Next year? An estimated $76 million. That's Idaho taxpayer money leaving Idaho.

There's a commonsense solution: Local Option Taxes.

Allowing counties to use Local Option Taxes would empower local communities to build and finance jail facilities — without touching the state budget. Latah County could build a facility large enough to house inmates from some of the overcrowded facilities statewide, keeping Idaho inmates in Idaho and Idaho dollars in Idaho. Other counties could do the same.

Blocking counties from solving their own problems isn't fiscal conservatism — it's government overreach. The government closest to the people works best. Let us prove it.

📢 Please contact your Idaho Legislators and urge them to support Local Option Taxes for counties. Our communities are ready to step up — we just need the authority to do so.

Thank you to the Moscow Chamber of Commerce for hosting the Saturday Town Hall with Idaho State Legislators. Representatives Lori McCann and Brandon Mitchell spoke about the budget, healthcare, education, and other issues.
Several attendees raised concerns about local control, and it’s easy to see why. This legislative session alone has seen numerous bills attempting to override local decision-making—from regulating chickens and eggs, to rat control, to city council districts, to short-term rental issues in Soda Springs, and even local funding decisions for a new jail.
Communities across Idaho are different. What makes sense in Soda Springs may not make sense in Moscow.
Even Ronald Reagan and the Republican Party platform have long recognized this principle:
“The most effective, responsible, and responsive government is the government closest to the people.”
Respect local control. Let communities make decisions that fit their own needs—and stop spending the roughly $4 million each year on legislative sessions filled with bills that override local authority and focus on unnecessary minutiae.
