The Bryant Library would like to nominate Matthew and Michael Granoff of Roslyn. The Granoff family has had a longstanding relationship with the Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation and the twin boys wanted to help support the staff. They reached out to many people in our community to make donations to their Meal Train Program, which has been created to help feed the nurses, doctors, and the entire staff who are working countless hours during this pandemic. So far, they have raised more than $6,000! Not only did they help feed these workers while they were on their shifts, they also helped support local food restaurants! Thank you, Matthew and Michael, for your thoughtfulness and your efforts!

The Bryant Library nominates Mrs. Ann Wandel, 96 of Roslyn, who painted this with the energy that she could gather. She felt that this painting needed to be seen. Mrs. Wandel has stood with America during tough times, including the Great Depression, where her family reacted in a way of survival by giving her the opportunity of being adopted by a family that could provide more for her. Mrs. Wandel feels as if these times are very awkward but like she’s experienced this before. She wants to spread a message of rejoice and strength by reaching as many people as possible by using art to help cope with these troubling times.

This wonderful nomination is from Jay Beber: “Neither rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these carriers from the swift completion of their rounds". Our mailman Norman braves that and a whole lot more. Every day, mask affixed, he brings us our mail and the unbelievable amount of packages we receive so we don’t have to go out to the stores ourselves. He does it with a smile, he does it on time and he is somebody we count on. Norman is our community hero!”

Salina Saullo: I want to nominate Pegah Shahbazi. She is the most caring nurse I know that always puts her patients before herself. The way she carries herself and represents the nursing profession is what any patient in a hospital would want. She treats everyone as if they are her family when they are under her care. She deserves the recognition as she plans to continue her nursing profession and going to grad school! Going to grad school doesn't mean earning a higher title, but it means that you are willing to dedicate yourself to further your knowledge for your patients and community. Go Pegah Shahbazi!

Let’s celebrate our hero, Justin Markowitz: an amazing 20 year old working tirelessly at our local Greenvale Stop and Shop in the maintenance department!
Justin has increased his hours dramatically since the pandemic started. He quickly identifies and cleans spills, sanitizes and retrieves shopping carts, maintains the bottle machines and assists customers in finding scarce items. While maintaining social distance, he helps customers bring bags to their cars and puts items back that are not wanted.
Justin’s smile and positive attitude is a breath of fresh air. When you see him at Stop and Shop, smile and you will feel the warmth. Thank you, Justin, for helping us to get groceries and feel safe during this chaotic time! This hero has been nominated by Karen Saul Miller!

Bryant Reference Librarian Nirmala Bhattacharya nominates Dr. Sudha Vijay Kumar, a pediatrician who has “served tirelessly for the sick children, without ever thinking about herself. This lady taught herself Spanish so as to better serve her patients. She is fluent in about half a dozen languages. It is an honor and pleasure that she is married to my brother. She has been working in the frontlines not far from the Elmhurst hospital."

Lauren Therese would like to recognize Matthew DiCamillo, Service Technician: “Matt's job is considered essential. Matt worked and continues to work during the entire pandemic. His field is extremely slow and jobs are scarce. Matt chose not to go on unemployment and continued to work reduced hours with less pay in order to help anyone in his community with emergency home repairs. Matt has shown loyalty to his company, TF O'brien. Proud of you.”

Diane Powell (RN) and Tom Powell nominate Marie Badagliacca, RN, Staff Nurse, Labor and Delivery, NYU Medical Center. They say: "Thank you and a big salute to our niece, Marie Badagliacca, for all your hard work and professionalism working with pregnant women about to deliver, some of whom are Covid positive and carrying Covid positive babies. It takes a compassionate and brave nurse to step into that delivery room arena every day; your courage follows in the footsteps of your grandmother, a Registered Nurse/First Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps, US Army, WWII."

Diane Powell would like to nominate her neighbor and friend, Julia Saltzman, of East Hills, who is a student at Columbia University School of Nursing. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and the school asked for volunteers to work as nurses' aides in a COVID unit, Julia bravely and unselfishly offered her caring service. Julia is in the trenches and is doing a great job helping patients and families get through this crisis. Diane’s message to her friend: “Good work, Julia! Proud of you. Diane J. Powell, MBA, RN, ANP, East Hills”.

Bryant Reference Librarian Gail Kitay nominates Diane J. Powell, an MBA RN Certified Case Manager, working daily throughout this pandemic who was, in fact, the inspiration for this Heroes Page. Her efforts were rewarded recently when a patient she was managing made a surprising recovery and was sent home! It is only through the diligent care of people like Diane that such triumphs occur. Here's Diane, in her own words: "Working through this unpredictable pandemic has been an honor, being a part of our hospital healthcare team to help many COVID patients get discharged back to their homes and providing some support to the families who are still waiting for their loved ones. Stay safe and keep washing!" From your Bryant Library family, THANK YOU, Diane!
