Calling anyone who lives or works in Woking who is willing to put their name forward and join the group of anti-cuts candidates willing to stand in May’s council elections as Trade Unionists and Socialists against the Cuts (TUSC). The Save Our Services meeting tonight agreed to support any woking resident or worker to stand. We have a small group already but the more candidates we can get the stronger we will be. Good riddance to him. We need a Worker’s MP for Spelthorne. We have had enough of self-serving Eton and Harrow-educated Tory rich boys. We need someone rooted in the local working class with a strong history in the workers’ movement - someone who will fight for the underdog, the low paid, the elderly and the young. Someone who stands up to be counted in fighting discrimination and for equality and access for all. Sadly, none of the major parties will be able to offer that and most so-called ‘independents’ are nothing of the sort - mostly ex-Tory, ex-Ukip anti-immigrant zenophopes.

On 6th September there will be yet another by-election in Spelthorne, Surrey. An ‘Independent Green’ councilor has resigned from his seat in the Ashford Town ward saying that ‘you can’t change anything here’. Many residents who voted Green here for the first time in May were looking for an alternative to the blue and red Tories usually on offer and will be disappointed by the lack of resolve shown by this councillor.
The Socialist Party in Surrey has tripled in size in the past few months and is still growing. We are having regular meetings of 15-20 mostly young workers and hold regular street activity in Guildford. Our last meeting (pictured) voted unanimously for me to stand as a Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) candidate in the by-election and once again give the working class of Spelthorne the opportunity to vote for a socialist councilor.
Spelthorne was Tory-led for many years. There have been numerous splits in the local Tory party leading to a number of separate ‘independent’ groups (all ex-Tories) taking a few council seats, along with the Greens and Labour – meaning no party has overall control. The voting records over the last few years show that many people have been looking for an alternative to the Tories but have been let down by all the mainstream parties.
Local government in Surrey is failing – Woking Borough Council has been taken over by government commissioners and are threatening wholesale cuts and redundancies. Guildford is looking like they will follow suit and Spelthorne has massive debts due to irresponsible historical Tory gambling on the property market.
No other candidate in this by-election will be putting forward a position against ALL cuts and for a massive investment in sustainable and affordable council housing. No other candidate will be prepared to expose the politically-corrupt, self-serving local politicians.
I will be standing on a bold socialist programme, offering local workers and residents the opportunity to join with us in a fight for the resources and services we need locally such as good social housing, fighting for faster, better access to your GP, defending local community services as well as campaigning for Spelthorne to be included in the ULEZ scrappage scheme and to come under the Transport for London and Oystercard system.

Laleham Residents Association recently sent out an email to residents effectively endorsing the Tory candidate in the &SheppertonGreen by-election on 11th August. I have tried to complain and asked for a right of reply but to no avail. My post below was blocked from their FB page.
The local Tory party are clearly worried that their grip on Spelthorne Council is crumbling and they are resorting to underhand and unfair tactics.
Using a residents association email list to promote a particular candidate is outrageous. They are clearly desperate.
If you live in the Laleham and Shepperton GREEN Residents Group area and want to see an end to Tory control in Spelthorne, if you have no faith in the Lib Dems behaving any differently (they formed the coalition with the Tories which launched the austerity programme) and want to see a councillor elected that will stand up to councillors and officers, challenge the corporations running roughshod over local peoples rights (Netflix, the Studios and the Gravel companies) who will stand up to central government, refuse to vote for cuts in services (campaigning against further cuts in the NHS and GP surgeries for instance) and who has worked tirelessly for over 20 years on behalf of residents and local workers then please do vote for me, for the TUSC - Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition on 11th August. Let’s shake up local politics, put a working class trade union activist into the council chamber and really start a local uprising. The time is right. Vote TUSC. VOTE PAUL COUCHMAN on 11 August.
