Varnstable, Dukes and Nantucket counties had the highest increase in food insecurity in MA. And you can earn well over the level of income needed to qualify for assistance and still have to make difficult choices.

Even $150,000 a year isn’t enough for groceries on the exclusive island.

How can you address food insecurity in your community? It exists everywhere and we can change lives.

Approximately 18.4 percent of all households in Massachusetts reported food insecurity in September 2024, which is close to the pandemic peak of 19.5 percent. Here’s how to offset the anxiety a little bit in your own community.

The Healthy Incentives Program (HIP) simply works for local farms and low income people. It is a win-win where farmers get income they need, and people on SNAP get access to locally produced, nutritious food. This budget was underfunded in the current fiscal year, so significant cuts were made in December. A family of 4 that once got $80 in HIP benefits was reduced to $20.
Call on your state rep and senator to add money back in a supplemental budget for this year and to fully fund the program for FY26
Massachusetts cuts to the Healthy Incentives Program is bad policy. It hurts farmers and stops lower income people from having access to locally grown, nutritious food.
Ask you state rep/senator to restore & fully fund HIP.

Small farmers in Massachusetts are asking state lawmakers to raise the amount of money allocated to SNAP recipients for a program that provides dollars to buy farm fresh local produce.

These individuals are working in different capacities in the farm to school movement and together they are driving significant change. This year we recognize Kale Blazers working in school food and nutrition, in education, and in policy. Their work is an inspiration to all who are dedicated to expanding local food sourcing and education across the Commonwealth.

Because the state budget did not fund the Healthy Incentives Program at adequate levels, SNAP recipient will have less access to good local food and local famers will suffer. Contact your state rep and senators about this.

Massachusetts farmers said they are bracing for revenue losses due to cuts in fresh produce SNAP benefits. Starting Dec. 1, families who utilize the state's Healthy Incentives Program to buy food directly from farmers will see their benefits cut to just $20 a month, regardless of household size. ...

The FY 2025 MA state budget underfunded the Healthy Incentives Program (HIP) by a significant amount. HIP gives families that get SNAP the opportunity to purchase local produce at participating vendors/farmers markets and be reimbursed up to certain monthly amounts based on family size.
Please contact your state rep and state senator to let them know additional money needs to be approved. Access to good nutritious food is not only a food issue, it is one of health. \Here is a table showing the cut effects.

We can all agree on this.

If any issue should bring together lawmakers across the aisle, it’s child hunger.
