I made this video a few years ago, remember my husband has been harvesting for over 20 years, but gives a better view of how the harvester rakes the blueberries 🫐 You can see for a big machine it is pretty gentle when it rakes 🫐 There is great skill and concentration required to run the harvester. Besides learning how to run the rakes up and down depending on plant and the ground, you have to make sure to watch the conveyors, how full the tote is and changing to new totes all while keeping your tractor following the line left by the tractor in front of you to make sure all crop is harvested. The fields are all different terrain with different clones of plants and obstacles hidden under the crop. Some of the berries grow really close to the ground and others plants have thick leaves and the berries are like grapes. The blueberry fields were created by moving glaciers so there are rocks and holes covering the fields. There is also grass, flowers and ferns that can make for a challenge, especially if the plants are wet. And I will add, as a hand raker, ferns were my nemesis lol. I think I still have scars on my hands from trying to rip them from the ground only to find they were like razor blades 😬 A harvester is easier on the back than traditional raking, but it is not as easy as it looks. Thank you for your interest supporting this heritage industry. I am proud to live in the Wild Blueberry capital of the world and invite everyone to visit in August to see the harvest, visit the farms and taste the best berries anywhere. If you have followed my page you know I am adamantly against any industrialization of our ocean. I have opposed offshore wind, large aquaculture and now can add underwater data centers. Tonight I picked up Representative Will Tuell and we headed to Eastport to show support for the citizens who are requesting a vote regarding a 400 acre underwater data center in Passamaquoddy Bay. While the legislature was still in session I heard about this proposal and was the key reason I fully supported the state wide moratorium. I had also reached out to Aaron Dana who is the Tribal Representative to discuss this proposal and we both agreed this was a bad idea. Towns and citizens need time to figure out if one of these centers is right for their community. We all know the outcome of the bill and now it’s a rush to find out the back door deals and work to get the people’s voices heard. As I mentioned at the rally today, I do believe there are places where these and other development could work, if the community approves. But time is needed to workout the details. Today I was happy to stand with both Representative Tuell and Representative Dana to show my support for home rule authority and to continue to fight to make sure to allow those who are the true stalwarts of the sea keep the heritage industries alive and the ocean wild 🌊🦞🦀🐚🐳🫍🐋🐠🐡🐙🦐

We (my family) don’t rake by hand anymore, well I may have done 3 or 4 swipes today 😬 but both my husband and I have been raking since we were kids. In fact, the field he is harvesting today was one we used to hand rake when he was 15 and I was 17. I worked 2nd shift at Wyman’s so would rake a few hours in the morning then go to the factory. Blueberry season is definitely a special time of year and brings back so many memories and was the base for developing my work ethic I have today. Zac has hand raked, hauled blueberries, work the fields both irrigating and fertilizing and harvesting in the tractor. I wish everyone had the opportunity to experience the blueberry harvest like I did as a kid. Now I’m just hopeful to keep the heritage industry alive and grow the market so people can still make a hard working honest living, well for 4 weeks 🫐

It is blueberry weekend…. but little blueberry farms will be open all month, or until the crop is picked. There are still those who rake by hand and there are lots of fields harvested by machine. The blueberries are perfect right now so stop into a farm or road side stand and support local. Buy year round in freezers or buy fresh and freeze your own and get stocked up on all the health benefits of Maine Wild Blueberries 🫐🫐🫐🫐🫐🫐🫐🫐🫐🫐🫐

Thank you Paula for your many years of service and your dedication to the citizens of Washington County. Congratulations on this accomplishment 🎉

Today, we celebrate an incredible milestone!

On July 30, 1986, Paula began her career with the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Based on some quick math, that means she started her full-time career at just 8 years old! 😉

In all seriousness, Paula has dedicated 40 years of service to the Washington County Sheriff's Office. During that time, she has served under five sheriffs, witnessed countless changes in public safety, and worked alongside generations of deputies, corrections officers and staff—with no signs of slowing down.

While the Sheriff's Office has evolved tremendously over the past four decades, one constant has remained: Paula.

Her role has grown and changed throughout her career, including becoming a part-time deputy in 1999. In 2014, she was reclassified from Administrative Assistant to Office Manager, recognizing her expanding supervisory responsibilities and the vital role she plays in the daily operations of the office.

If there's a question about virtually any aspect of the Sheriff's Office, chances are Paula has the answer. Her knowledge, experience, and commitment have made her an invaluable resource to both the agency and the community we serve.

It's impossible to fully capture the impact Paula has had over the last 40 years, but one thing is certain: her dedication, professionalism, and work ethic have left a lasting mark on the Washington County Sheriff's Office and the citizens of Washington County.

Please join us in congratulating Paula on 40 remarkable years of service. Thank you for everything you have done—and continue to do—for our office and our community. Congratulations, Paula!
