The City of Iron River, out of an abundance of caution, has declared a preemptive State of Emergency, effective midnight tonight in response to the National Weather Service alert for a snow event with heavy snowfall and strong winds forecast beginning tonight and ending March 16.
Residents are strongly urged to stay off all City streets tonight and throughout the event period, unless travel is absolutely necessary. We also request no.parking on City streets. The anticipated conditions will create significant safety risks and require uninterrupted access for snowplows, sanding operations, and emergency response vehicles.
Limiting travel will:
1. Allow snowplows and sanding crews to safely address heavy snow accumulation and drifting conditions
2. Reduce the risk of crashes, stranded vehicles, and injuries
3. Improve the efficiency and speed of snow removal operations
4. Ensure emergency services can respond without delay
City crews will be working to manage snow, drifting, and reduced visibility as the storm progresses. Unnecessary travel during this period places both motorists and City personnel at risk and significantly slows cleanup.
We appreciate your cooperation and patience as crews will work to restore safe travel conditions as quickly as possible. Updates will be provided through official City communication channels as conditions improve and normal travel and parking can safely resume.
