Understanding Historic Designations

We've received questions about historic designations and Roosevelt High School. RHS has a national and state designation. It does not have a local designation. Check out this video, which explains historic designations. The Gary Historic Preservation Commission is in the process of reviewing structures, which should have a local historic designation.

Judge Shows Empathy

It can be easy to lose empathy when dealing with people, especially in criminal situations. So, it's good to see that this judge has not lost his ability to show empathy.

"So much of what we do is one big paper mill. We have to make sure it's not a people mill. These are real people we are dealing with." - Judge Murray

HISTORY

"I Have a Dream"

#ThisDayInHistory

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The demonstrators – Black and White, poor and rich – came together in the nation’s capital demanding voting rights and equal opportunity for African Americans and to appeal for an end to racial segregation and discrimination.

The peaceful rally was the largest assembly for a redress of grievances that the capital had ever seen, and King was the last speaker. With the statue of Abraham Lincoln – the Great Emancipator- towering behind him, he told the struggle of ahead, stressing the importance of continued action and nonviolent protest.

“I have a dream,” he boomed over the crowd stretching from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument, “that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.’” He equated the civil rights movement with the highest and noblest ideals of the American tradition, allowing many to see for the first time the importance of urgency of racial equality.

In the year after the March on Washington, the civil rights movement achieved two of its greatest successes: the ratification of the 24th Amendment and the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

John Lewis, civil rights icon and congressman, dies at 80

May Rep. John Lewis rest in peace.

"I believe that if you see something that you want to get done, you cannot give up, and you cannot give in." - Rep. John Lewis

Lewis was the last survivor of the Big Six civil rights activists, led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. He was best known for leading 600 protesters in the 1965 Bloody Sunday march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama.
