British army Lt. Gen. James Bucknall, deputy commander of International Security Assistance Force Afghanistan, greets Col. Gary Johnston, commander of the 504th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas, during an Aug. 10 visit to Forward Operating Base Spin Boldak in southern Afghanistan. Established in 2001, the ISAF operates with the involvement of more than 50 nations, including the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, where combatant commanders often rely on information from BFSBs to gain situation awareness of the battlefield, thereby accomplishing their missions of better preparing Afghan security forces and governments to take the lead in their nation's rebuilding.

A UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter arrives at Forward Operating Base Mehtar Lam carrying International Security Assistance Force officials July 19. The officials flew to Mehtar Lam to attend a transition commencement ceremony at the governors compound. Among those in attendance were Mohommad Iqbal Azizi, governor of Laghman province, Dr. Ashraf, Ghani Ahmadzai, transition coordinator, Gen. Daniel Allyn, 1st Cavalry Division commander, and Lt. Gen. James Bucknall, deputy director of International Security Assistance Force.

The 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team welcomed Bucknall to the FOB and presented a comprehensive breakdown of Task Force Thunderbird's overarching mission across Laghman province and into other regions of Regional Command East. Bucknall responded with, "I wanted to understand what is happening in Laghman, and I particularly wanted to understand how this great brigade here was performing. I've come away with a really good impression - great progress being made and great momentum being built and I'm hugely impressed
