Hello Centaurs,

We are kicking off the new year with an exciting opportunity to support our youth! BCI and the equity team at Brooklyn Center Community Schools will be offering “Affinity Month Teach-ins.” Sign up, create a workshop and get paid to help out your community.

What’s that? Well, affinity months or heritage months are intended to help raise awareness and understanding for the group or culture such as Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, and Women's History Month plus many more!

Teach-ins started at the University of Michigan in 1965 as a way for community members to engage and enrich students through practical outside education. What would you want to teach to your younger self?

Event Details:
Sign-up sheet: https://forms.gle/s32NuiPnnxfaL2kg9

Teach-in format:
We are asking for those interested to come in and offer a teach-in connected to an affinity month around those themes of joy, heritage, identity, legacy, freedom, skills and history.

Because we believe in an equitable relationship, the equity team will be providing a small stipend to help with your workshop. This stipend can either be paid directly to you or a charitable organization of your choice.

We’ll be able to support 8 workshops. So, if finance was a barrier for you to get involved, now is your chance!

We’ll be starting with Black History month as our pilot month! Looking forward to starting the year off strong.

Starting this February, Brooklyn Center Schools is seeking out alumni, families and community organizations to come in and offer a teach-in to a class of current students. The spirit of a teach-in was started at the University of Michigan in 1965 as a way to have a more honest and action oriented co...

Happy New Year! Hope everyone is doing well and started the year off right.

Wanted to say thanks again to all those that donated and supported our Video Game Production Class. It's been a great experience and here is a small interview style video we did for class!

The students will be displaying their final project at STEAM Night at BCCS on January 19th at 5pm. Stay tuned for more information.

Hi, we are BC Initiatives. We are an outreach program helping out Brooklyn Center Middle and High school students and the community.

Thank you so much for supporting us! As we grow, we will need more resources to help support our students.

We are working with BCCS to provide career pathway programs and job shadow opportunities. Our pilot program, Video Game Production, started this fall and where we teach the students how to build a roadmap to becoming a video game developer.

We teach them to build a video game from idea to final product using the Unity game engine. Bring industry experts to talk about their experiences and bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world. Then at the end of the class, we take them on a tour of a video game company to show them a day in the life of a developer.

The classes are twice a week for 1 hour each.

The school has provided the students with laptops for the class, but unfortunately, we don’t have any mice for the students, which hinders the learning process.

We have about 30 students and would like to give each a wireless mouse at $20 a piece. So, which cost a total of $600.

We have hired an instructor specializing in Unity game development for 20 hours to help us with our pilot program. We would like to have them continue with us, which costs a total of $400.

Any and all support counts! Thank you so much for your help!!

Hello Alumni and Community members,

We are proud to announce our first enrichment course with BCS, Video Game Production. Many of the students express interest in a career in game development and we responded.

The course will be taught by our executive director, McIsiah Kendema who will focus on the business side of game development, and in partnership with Pdot Creations, Lovester Posey will focus on the technical side.

The course will have several industry speakers as well as a tour of a local video game studio for the students to experience the day and life of a game developer.

We are looking for sponsors to help offset some of the cost of the course. So, if you know anyone or any companies that would be interested in this project please email us at:

Hello Alumni and Community members,

Thank you for supporting us! It's been a powerful year, and we are making notable impacts inside and outside our community.

Our group came together for a common cause, and BC Initiatives wanted a way to show solidarity with BCCS.

Well, one year later, our new logo symbolizes that solidary and was created by one of our talented alumni, Selena Rios.

Thank you, Selena!

More updates are coming soon. Make sure to share our page with other alumni and community members. Centaur strong!
