Today is the 78th anniversary of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Allies worked together during World War II and liberated the survivors of Auschwitz on this day in 1945. We remember the victims and honor our Veterans and Allies for their service.

Michael Hyacinthe, a U.S. Navy Veteran, cofounded HAS HEART with the mission of utilizing art, design and fashion to benefit, uplift and inspire Veterans. Michael served as a Navy Seabee combat warfare specialist for eight years. His vision for HAS HEART was to develop a way to connect with wounded Veterans and to help them experience restoration through art.

During 2022, VA permanently housed 40,401 homeless Veterans, providing them with the safe, stable homes that they deserve. This exceeded the department’s goal to house 38,000 Veterans in 2022 by 6.3%.

The total number of Veterans experiencing homelessness has decreased by 11% since 2020 and by 55.3% since 2010, but as Secretary McDonough says, we will not rest until every Veteran has a good, safe home in this country they fought to defend.

VCS commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Jan. 16, 2023. Established byPublic Law 98-144, this federal holiday observed each year on the third Monday in January, around the date of Dr. King’s actual birthday on Jan. 15.

Dr. King was a great advocate and believer in public service, which makes this a great day for service to our communities: a day ON, not a day OFF!

The Veteran Canteen Service (VSC) team at the Lebanon, PA, VA hospital helped Navy Veteran Galen Hoover surprise his wife during their anniversary while he was staying in the hospital. VCS made this extra special by rolling out the VIP treatment, setting up an exclusive corner table with linens, flowers and even a personalized sign that read, “Reserved for Mr. and Mrs. Hoover.” During their meal, Mr. Hoover looked at his wife and said, “I feel like we are on our first date again.”
