The PROJECTED budget gap for the Artesia Aquatic Center for this year is a LOSS of $750,000.
Priority 1- Close the gap.
Will we close it completely and make a profit? No.
Must we work to stop the bleeding best we can? Yes.
The current plan is a policy change for bringing in outside food, specifically from restaurants. Pizza, burgers, etc. and encouraging pool concession stand sales that are comparable in price to your typical outside options.
And installing the Ninja System, using grant funds, to increase traffic in the pool to use something unique and exciting to our area.
The pool is working to provide swimmers with an improved expanded concession stand and I have included the first draft(in the comments) of what the pool is considering, to give you an idea and to seek your suggestions.
Priority 2- Property cleanliness and safety. Extra large coolers have become a discussion point for pool management for issues such as broken glass bottles and alcohol.
Does this concern pertain to everyone? Of course not. Most swimmers are considerate and appropriate.
But it is still an issue and prevalent enough that it requires addressing. The Aquatic Center is not a campground and if a group creating a "campsite" that includes a cooler of this size, multiple hot and ready pizzas, McDonalds, etc. this will stop at the start of the season and I make no apologies for it.
I have included a picture of many of the large sized coolers the pool is seeing come in. To give you an idea of the conflict these coolers present for operations.
Will there be exceptions? Of course. Do you really feel like your City is being ran as a one size fits all model? Have more faith in those that you have elected and the facilities we strive to perfect for the public.
I’m available this Tuesday at Minute with the Mayor. 8:30am at Kith&Kin. Come, sit and talk to me about your concerns with this pool policy change. Despite the narrative of some, I truly want to hear from you and get your perspective before making decisions that may affect your family at our pool.
