FROM THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS - SEPTEMBER 30: "Smith, 68, is running on his depth of experience. He has 14 years as a judge of the 192nd Civil District Court under his belt, a busy court that handles a wide range of cases. This is the judge who ruled that Dallas must refund the natural gas operator who paid to drill on city land but was refused a permit, and this is the judge who dismissed Ross Perot Jr.'s complaint that Mark Cuban was mismanaging the Mavericks. (And this is the judge who later officiated at the wedding of Dirk Nowitzki and Jessica Olsson.) Smith expressed concern that political fights about the court system are eroding the public’s trust in the judiciary, and trust is crucial. And he rightly expressed concern that remote procedures during the pandemic could erode the transparency of the court, further damaging public trust. We appreciate a judge who is thinking about unintended consequences of the way COVID-19 is changing our lives."
