At the 31st ARSO General Assembly in Zanzibar, I had the honour of publicly launching two important books authored by Princess Dr Marline Sambo Waziri.

Her works, “Evolution and Development of National, Regional and International Standardisation” and “Standardisation on the African Continent: An Antidote for AfCFTA”, offer timely insights into the role of harmonised standards in shaping a sustainable and integrated African market.

On behalf of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, I congratulate Dr Waziri on this impactful contribution. The books are now officially launched.

I am pleased to represent SON at the 31st African Organisation for Standardisation. (ARSO) General Assembly, currently being held in the beautiful city of Zanzibar, Tanzania.

As we deliberate with colleagues from across Africa, our focus remains clear: to remove technical trade barriers, promote intra-African commerce, and build trust in the quality and safety of African goods and services, thus strengthening the critical role of standardisation in shaping the future of trade and industrial development across our continent.

As we deliberate with colleagues from across Africa, our focus remains clear: to remove technical barriers to trade, promote intra-African commerce, and build trust in the quality and safety of African goods and services.

At the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), we are fully committed to this vision: deepening partnerships, aligning with continental frameworks, and driving Nigeria’s active role in advancing harmonised standards that empower businesses and protect consumers.

Together, we can build a stronger, more integrated Africa, one standard at a time.

Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh,

As we join millions of Muslims around the world in celebrating Eid al-Adha, I extend my heartfelt greetings and prayers to all Nigerians, our staff, partners, and the global community observing this blessed occasion.

Eid al-Adha reminds us of the virtues of sacrifice, obedience, and compassion, values that resonate deeply with our mission at the Standards Organisation of Nigeria. Just as Prophet Ibrahim (AS) exemplified faith and dedication, we too are committed to upholding the highest standards that ensure safety, quality, and excellence in every product and service that touches the lives of Nigerians.

On this joyous day, let us renew our resolve to work together in building a Nigeria that stands tall on the foundation of integrity, innovation, and consumer protection. May this Eid bring peace, prosperity, and blessings to your homes, and may the spirit of sacrifice inspire us all to contribute meaningfully to the progress of our great nation.

Eid Mubarak to you and your families.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ifeanyi C. Okeke, FCA, ACTI

I’m proud to share that the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has certified 44 companies and 138 products in Oyo State with the prestigious MANCAP mark. This is a strong statement of our collective commitment to quality.

This achievement reflects the growing readiness of Nigerian manufacturers to meet national standards and compete on the global stage. Through the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP), we continue to support local producers in building safer, more reliable, and internationally accepted products.

As Director General, I remain committed to ensuring that SON provides the technical backing, regulatory guidance, and capacity support needed to position Made in Nigeria as a global standard for excellence.

Congratulations to all the certified companies. Your dedication to compliance and quality moves Nigeria forward.

Let us continue to raise the bar together.

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), in collaboration with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), proudly welcomed Mr. Philippe Metzger, Secretary General of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), to a High-Level Stakeholders’ Forum in Abuja.

This was a defining moment in our journey to strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global standardisation and power ecosystem. The presence of key figures from regulatory bodies, professional associations, academia, the diplomatic corps, and the private sector underscored the importance of this engagement.

In my remarks, I emphasised SON’s strong commitment to global best practices. Nigeria’s growing adoption of IEC standards is already yielding significant benefits, especially in improving the quality of locally produced electrical materials and ensuring safer infrastructure.

Mr. Metzger acknowledged Nigeria’s vital role in the global economy and urged greater involvement in IEC governance to shape standards that reflect the realities of African countries. He also highlighted the IEC’s evolving priorities, including digital innovation, artificial intelligence, sustainability, and low-carbon technologies. Nigeria has a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to this global transition.

Discussions during the forum addressed key areas such as conformity assessment, expanding digital access to standards, developing national annexes tailored to local conditions, standardisation education, support for certified local manufacturers under the MANCAP scheme, and strategies to curb substandard imports through the SONCAP programme and factory inspections.

This forum reaffirmed SON’s resolve to deepen public awareness of standards, promote quality assurance, and ensure that Nigerian industries remain competitive and safe. The path to national development must be guided by strong standards and driven by innovation.

Together, we are shaping a stronger, smarter Nigeria.

I was truly delighted as the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) hosted a brilliant group of Engineering students from the University of Lagos at our state-of-the-art laboratory complex in Ogba, Lagos, on May 19, 2025.

Represented by our Deputy Director of Laboratory Services, Mr. Adetoyi Adeyinka Oluwarotimi, we took the students through an experiential learning tour designed to deepen their understanding of how standards shape quality, safety, and national development.

These future engineers engaged directly with our lab operations and gained firsthand insights into SON’s critical services. Most importantly, they learned about the importance of verifying MANCAP (for locally made products) and SONCAP (for imports) marks as symbols of quality assurance.

The guided tour of our labs was a standout moment—an inspiring opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world application. I remain committed to fostering a culture of quality and empowering the next generation of Nigerian engineers to champion standardization in all spheres of development.

It is 200 days since our Honourable Minister, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, assumed leadership. At the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), I am proud to work under her vibrant and purposeful direction. Her commitment to excellence, sharp vision, and drive for national development have been clear from day one. With her support, we’ve deepened our work in strengthening quality infrastructure and putting consumer protection front and centre. We look forward to even greater progress under her inspiring leadership.

In commemoration of World Metrology Day 2025, I joined SON executives and a representative of the Director General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) in Lagos to reflect on the critical role of metrology in our national development.

Metrology, the science of measurement, is often unseen, yet it underpins everything from industrial processes to consumer safety and international trade. Accurate measurement is the foundation upon which all standardisation is built. Without it, quality assurance would be unreliable, and trust in products and systems would erode.

At the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, we intentionally strengthen our national measurement infrastructure and align it with international best practices. We know that standardisation is not a solo journey. That is why we continue to deepen our collaboration with public and private stakeholders, especially our manufacturing, science, and innovation partners.

On this special day, I reaffirm our commitment to a future where measurement integrity supports sustainable development, boosts industrial productivity, and enhances Nigeria’s global competitiveness.

I am honoured to be part of the 16th Meeting of the National Council on Industry, Trade and Investment (NCITI) currently taking place in Lagos.

This year’s theme, "Accelerating Diversification by Leveraging Industry, Trade and Investment for Shared Prosperity," speaks directly to our national priorities and the urgent need to deepen economic growth through innovation, industrialisation and strategic investment.

As Director General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, I am particularly engaged in the conversations around optimising manufacturing clusters, harnessing technology for digital trade facilitation and improving the ease of doing business, as well as expanding access to finance for sustainable and diversified economic growth.

At SON, we are fully committed to building a standards-driven economy that supports local production, boosts investor confidence, and opens up opportunities for shared prosperity across Nigeria.

I had the privilege of hosting a high-level delegation from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), led by Dr. Chidi Ike, Commissioner for Engineering and Performance Monitoring, who represented the Chairman/CEO, Engr. Sanusi Garba.

Our discussions centred on deepening collaboration between SON and NERC to improve quality assurance across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). The issue of unreliable certifications and substandard electrical materials, particularly transformers, was brought to the fore. I reaffirmed SON's commitment to supporting NERC in verifying the authenticity of product certificates and ensuring that only accredited test results are accepted by prospective licensees.

I also proposed the urgent review and update of the existing MoU between our two agencies, originally signed in 2015, to reflect current realities in the power sector. Furthermore, we are advocating for the harmonization of safety codes and standards into unified National Codes of Practice to guide not just federal but also State Electricity Regulatory Commissions.

This partnership is more than just institutional; it is strategic and essential. Together, we will raise the bar for quality, safety, and reliability in our nation’s power infrastructure. The Nigerian consumer deserves nothing less.

He Is Risen... and So Must We: In Purpose, Integrity, and Standards.
This Easter, I am reminded of the extraordinary power of rising again, of light conquering darkness, and of purpose finding its way through pain. Christ’s resurrection is not just a story of hope. It is a call to rise, to do better, to live better, and to give better.
In my journey and current responsibility, I see raising standards as more than just policy. It is a personal challenge to grow daily in service, accountability, and the pursuit of excellence, for ourselves and the Nigeria we believe in.
As we celebrate Easter with our loved ones, may we embrace the spirit of renewal. Let’s continue to rise, above challenges, above compromise, and above all that holds us back from becoming our best.
May this season strengthen your faith and fill your heart with peace and purpose.
Happy Easter.
