We wanted to provide some context for customers who are seeing electricity usage on their accounts despite having no power. The usage you see on your account could be an estimate, due to the inability to communicate with your smart meter. Once meter communication is restored, your utility will work to replace your estimated reads with actual reads. Rest assured, you’ll only be billed for actual usage when your smart meter data becomes available.

Boil notices have gone out across most of Texas due to low water pressure caused by the winter freeze. If you have running water, please make sure to boil it for at least three minutes before you use it for cooking or drinking. If you don’t have a way to boil water, individuals are advised to use bottled water for consumption.

While it looks like the worst of the weather is behind us, many areas across the state are still experiencing freezing temperatures. In order to prevent damage to your pipes while the weather persists, make sure to keep all exposed pipes wrapped, turn off the water supply to your home and open all of your taps to completely drain your pipes. Fill a bathtub or other vessels with water before you turn off your supply, so you have water to boil and to use for the toilet.

If you’re in an area where temperatures are above freezing, you’re asked to stop maintaining a drip or a stream in your faucets and to conserve water as much as possible. Make sure to check your home for leaks or other pipe damage before you turn the water back on. If you find a leak, shut the water off immediately.

In the past few days, the people of Texas have shown inspiring levels of courage and hope in the face of dire circumstances. As we continue to watch closely for updates from ERCOT and local utilities, we’re seeing power restored to more areas as the grid becomes more stable. While there’s a long way to go before things are back to normal, we feel confident that the worst is behind us.

You may have seen media reports in recent days about the staggering costs of electricity. Rest assured, we will continue to serve and honor our existing prices and contracts. Our doors are open, and we aren’t at risk of going out of business or having any of our customers rolled onto a Provider of Last Resort (POLR). And when your local TDSP is able to restore power to your home, we’ll be right there with you for the long haul.

Although temperatures will start to rise in the coming days, extreme cold and power outages are expected to persist through the end of this week. As we look towards beginning the recovery process, we hope everyone will keep these tips in mind as Texas continues to weather this extreme winter event.

• To conserve energy, if you have power, avoid using large appliances like washing machines, ovens or dishwashers to conserve energy. Turn off and unplug non-essential lights and appliances, and refrain from charging multiple devices at one time.

• When you regain power, focus on conserving energy. Ramp up power usage slowly to lower your impact on the electric grid.

• Check on loved ones who may still be without power or heat and keep in regular contact.

• NEVER use home stoves or ovens as a heat source. If you are using a fireplace, keep furniture and flammable items away from the fire. Put the fire out if you are leaving the room or going to bed.

• DO NOT use a generator, grill or gas range indoors. Move these items outside to prevent the accumulation of carbon monoxide, which can be lethal to humans and pets.

• NEVER run your car engine inside the garage. If you need to charge your phone or warm up inside your car, park your car outside to prevent accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.

• Avoid walking and driving on ice. If you must go out, limit time spent outdoors and dress in warm layers.

• When in doubt, throw it out. Discard perishable food that has been exposed to temperatures 40 degrees or higher for two hours or more.

• Discard medication that should be refrigerated if the power is out for more than a day. Consult a doctor or pharmacist if a life depends on the refrigerated drugs and use medicine only until a new supply is available.

• To conserve energy, if you have power, set your thermostat no higher than 68°, and open curtains and blinds during the day to allow the sun to warm your home and conserve energy used from heating.

Due to the extreme cold weather, the increase in demand for electricity has exceeded supply, causing outages ranging from a few minutes to one or more days. The transmission and distribution utility providers across the state are aware of the outages, and they are in the best position to communicate outage statuses to customers.

The extreme cold and the prolonged outages have also contributed to increased call volume and website traffic. We apologize for any delays.

If you have power, please keep your thermostat at or below 68 degrees and avoid using large appliances, in order to conserve energy. Find more ways to conserve at http://ms.spr.ly/6184pfyjn.

We appreciate your patience, along with the efforts of everyone working hard to restore power.

Due to record-breaking electricity demand in Texas, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has implemented rotating outages. Some areas are experiencing extended outages, and internet and cellular providers may also have service interruptions. Local utility providers are working to resolve the issues. Stay safe and conserve electricity while the cold weather lasts. http://ms.spr.ly/6181p425H

NOTE: If you want to enroll or switch to a new electricity plan, the soonest possible start date will be Saturday, February 20.
