🛡️ in the last year and five months, Sheriff Crouch’s administration has focused heavily on updating procedures following the July 2024 Sonya Massey incident and creating and updating several policy changes aimed at organization reform and community trust. 🏛️ So what has she done since taking office in September 2024:

Vetting and Hiring Reforms 📋 - overhauled the department's hiring process to prevent the recruitment of "wandering officers" with problematic backgrounds: 🛑

👤 In-Person Background Checks: She mandated that background investigators conduct in-person visits to an applicant's previous employers whenever possible, rather than relying solely on phone calls.
📂 FOIA Records Requests: The department now files Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to obtain full personnel and disciplinary records from an applicant’s former agencies.
🚫 DUI Disqualification: Following recommendations from the Massey Commission, she agreed to a policy of not considering candidates with a DUI conviction within the past five years.
⚖️ Merit Commission Involvement: She has increased the role of the five-member Merit Commission in the screening and vetting of potential deputies.

Training and Mental Health 🧠💪

🗣️ De-escalation Training: Crouch expanded in-person de-escalation training for deputies, moving away from purely web-based modules. This training was funded through a grant from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation.
❤️ Staff Mental Health: She introduced specific training programs for both deputies and correctional officers focused on maintaining and improving their own mental health.
🛡️ Jail Staff Training: Enhanced training for jail staff specifically on the use of tasers and de-escalation within the correctional facility.

Community Transparency and Accountability 🤝📢

🤝 Community Engagement: Her command staff now holds quarterly meetings with local organizations, including the NAACP (Springfield branch), Black Lives Matter Springfield, and the Faith Coalition for the Common Good.
📱 Digital Communication: The office launched "The Sheriff's App" to streamline the dissemination of public information and improve two-way communication with residents.
🇺🇸 Federal Cooperation: She has pledged full transparency and cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice and the Massey Commission regarding their ongoing reviews of the department's civil rights and hiring practices.

Legislative and Jail Priorities ⚖️🚔

🏛️ SAFE-T Act Reforms: Crouch has publicly lobbied for "tweaks" to Illinois' Pretrial Fairness Act (SAFE-T Act). She supports House Bill 4275, which would give judges broader discretion to detain individuals charged with any felony while they await trial.
📹 Jail Surveillance: While her opponent has made jail cameras a campaign issue, Crouch has stated that upgrades to the jail’s surveillance camera systems are already an ongoing, active project under her administration.

🥳 The Supreme Court on Wednesday revived an Illinois Congress member’s lawsuit over a state mail-in ballot law, paving the way for political candidates nationwide to challenge election laws more easily in their states. 🥳

The justices ruled 7-2 that Rep. Mike Bost (R-Ill.) has the legal right to sue Illinois over its ability to count mail-in ballots received after Election Day.
