Jimma University Staff Trained in Entrepreneurial Mindset and Resource Mapping for Institutional Autonomy

Jimma University has successfully concluded a two-day intensive training program for its executive and middle-level staff. The workshop focused on fostering an entrepreneurial mindset, strategic resource mapping, and inspirational leadership.

The event commenced with a welcome address from Dr. Teklu Tafesse, Head of the President’s Office, who highlighted the university’s commitment to self-reliance and the essential role of empowered staff in facilitating autonomous operations.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Jemal Abafita, President of Jimma University, emphasized the importance of the training at this pivotal moment. "As we embark on this critical journey towards autonomy, our capacity to think entrepreneurially, creatively mobilize resources, and lead with vision will determine our success," stated Dr. Jemal. He encouraged participants to move beyond conventional administrative approaches and adopt innovation as a core practice.

The training was conducted by Dr. Erssido Lendebo, a distinguished consultant, author, and current member of the Jimma University Board of Governors. With his extensive expertise in organizational transformation, Dr. Erssido guided participants through a comprehensive curriculum designed to turn autonomy into actionable strategies.

Over the course of two days, sessions included:

• Entrepreneurial Leadership and Institutional Transformation
• Innovation, Opportunity Identification, and Strategic Thinking
• Institutional Resource Mapping and Assessment Techniques
• Resource Mobilization, Revenue Generation, and Strategic Partnerships
• Institutional Business Development and Commercialization Opportunities
• Sustainable Income Generation and Institutional Competitiveness

A notable feature of the workshop was the interactive Group Work session, where participants crafted a business model canvas tailored to their respective departments. This was followed by presentations of group outputs and recommendations, encouraging cross-learning and peer feedback.

The program also included remarks from members of the Board of Governors, who reiterated their support for staff-led initiatives aimed at achieving financial sustainability and strategic growth.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Jemal Abafita delivered an inspiring "Way Forward," urging all staff to implement their action plans with urgency and accountability. "Training without action is merely entertainment. Let these two days serve as the catalyst for transforming how we lead, generate revenue, and serve our community," he concluded.

Jimma University Medical Center Celebrates Historic Achievement in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Initiative

The pediatric cardiac surgery campaign at Jimma University Medical Center (JUMC) has successfully concluded, providing life-saving surgical interventions for 13 children suffering from congenital heart disease (CHD).

This initiative was carried out in close partnership with Ethio-Istanbul Hospital and the Heart to Heart Foundation.

A significant milestone was reached when one of the surgeries was performed entirely by the JUMC medical team, marking a crucial advancement in local cardiac surgical independence in Ethiopia.

All patients have made full recoveries and have been discharged in good health.

The administration of Jimma University expresses its sincere gratitude to the owner and staff of Ethio-Istanbul Hospital, the founder of the Heart to Heart Foundation, and the outstanding clinical and administrative teams at JUMC for their collective generosity, expertise, and commitment to saving young lives.

Jimma University Showcases Clinical Trial Unit at National Conference, Pioneering Evidence-Based Healthcare in Ethiopia

On May 28, 2028, Jimma University’s Clinical Trial Unit (JUCTU) showcased its initiatives at the annual Conference of the Clinical Trials Network of Ethiopia (CTN-ET), held at the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI). The university's involvement emphasizes its pivotal role in addressing the significant underrepresentation of clinical trials in Ethiopia and across Africa.

Clinical trials are still scarce on the continent, which limits the generation of local medical evidence and obstructs the application of research findings to enhance patient care. To address this issue, Jimma University established JUCTU, which actively conducts Phase II–IV clinical trials and diagnostic validation studies. These efforts aim to generate robust evidence, connect research with clinical practice, and ultimately improve healthcare services and patient outcomes.

As a founding member of CTN-ET, Jimma University plays a vital role on the network’s steering committee, influencing the future of clinical research in Ethiopia. This year marked a significant achievement with the inaugural Clinical Trials Week in Ethiopia, celebrated from May 20–28. The week focused on bridging clinical practice and research, acknowledging regulatory advancements, and enhancing media engagement.

The theme of the CTN-ET Annual Conference, “Improving Clinical Trials Representation: Opportunities for Ethiopia,” attracted a diverse group of participants, including network member institutions, government officials, regulators, academics, healthcare providers, development partners, industry representatives, and global organizations dedicated to promoting ethical and high-quality clinical research in Africa. During the conference, Jimma University presented JUCTU through a digital display session, providing stakeholders with valuable networking opportunities and avenues for collaboration.
