Maplewood Police, Fire, and Public Works/Executive are going head-to-head this September in a friendly food drive competition benefiting WOW (Weekend on Wheels). Public Works/Executive claimed the title last year—will they defend their crown, or will a new champion emerge?

When you donate, consider completing a full WOW Box. Each box provides a local family with weekend essentials.

A completed box includes:

Cereal
Toaster pastries

Heads up, Maplewood!

Big Bend will be closed to traffic between Sunnen Drive and Oxford Boulevard while crews remove the existing bridges at Greenwood Boulevard and Pacific Avenue.

📅 Closure begins: Friday, August 28 at 10 PM
📅 Reopens: Monday, August 31 at 5 AM

Drivers should plan ahead and use Laclede Station Road and South Hanley Road as alternate routes.

Once Big Bend reopens Monday morning, traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction for the majority of bridge construction.

Please allow extra travel time and use caution when traveling through the area.

The Maplewood Richmond Heights School District has returned to school this week. We have posted signs asking people to be mindful of children crossing the street and to be on the look out for bus stops. Have a great school year!

We had the opportunity to train with Monarch Fire Protection District inside Gateway Studios & Production Services. Crews reviewed ropes systems, vortex usage and completed two simulated rescue scenarios inside the building. Crews were 80ft up on a catwalk. Rope systems were used to lower the simulated victims down. One group used the bucket in the ladder truck to assist with the rescue and the other group had to package the victim in the stokes basket and lower them to the ground. Thank you to both agencies for allowing us to come and train with them.

Yesterday we had the opportunity to train with West County EMS & Fire Protection District Metro West Fire Protection District, St. Louis County Missouri Mehlville Fire Protection District on a simulated crane rescue. We want to thank Tarlton Corporation and Custom Service Crane service for allowing us to train on their site and use the equipment. The crane operator was our simulated victim who was having a medical emergency. Crews had to climb to the top of the 140ft crane with all of our rope rescue equipment. Crews assessed and packaged the operator while on top of the crane in the cab. A twin tension lowering system was used to safely lower the operator to the ground. Thank you to everyone involved in the successful completion of this training exercise.

At approximately 5AM on Friday July 10th, St. Louis County Task Force 3 was requested to assist with water rescues in Southern Missouri around the Lesterville/ Black River area. Crews were advised that multiple camp grounds and local homes had been affected by 10-12 inches of rain overnight. Lead Engineer Chris McCracken and Private Jacob Hecht and our inflatable boat, along with two members from the Clayton Fire Department, were activated to deploy filling out the rescue squad from the Central Core area.
After a quick brief, the Strike Team responded to the staging area at Hwy 72/21 and Twin Rivers Road in Lesterville, MO. Following updates from local fire and operational intel, the team was advised of multiple active rescues, with as many as 40-60 people stranded on top of cars, in homes, and at the general store of a local float trip operation.
Task Force 3 arrived on scene while Task Force 5 (Franklin and Jefferson County) were already on scene conducting rescues in the area. The two Task Forces merged together to form a unified command. The highly trained water rescue teams worked tirelessly for 4 hours. Our members along with members from Clayton were responsible for extracting 18 total rescues, 15 civilians and 3 rescuers who had a catastrophic boat failure. Combined efforts from Task Force 3 & 5, along with Missouri Task Force 1, a total of 360 rescues were completed that day.
Our members returned home later that evening with the rest of team from Task Force 3. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to help the people of Lesterville, MO. The Maplewood Fire Department currently has 17 of our 21 members assigned to Task Force 3. All members on Task Force 3 are trained in the following disciplines: Boat Operator, Swift Water Rescue Technician, Rope Rescue Technician, Confined Space Technician, Trench Rescue Technician, and Structural Collapse Technician.
The incredible teamwork across all agencies deployed from across the state of Missouri significantly contributed to the success of this mission and numerous lives saved.

18 years ago today, Ryan Hummert was taken from his family, friends, and co-workers in the line of duty. Ryan will always be part of the Maplewood Fire Department. You are loved, missed and will never be forgotten. Rest in peace Ryan and continue to look over all of our First Responders.

Please plan ahead and allow extra travel time as construction begins to replace the Big Bend bridges at Pacific Avenue and Greenwood Boulevard.

Heads up, Maplewood! St. Louis County will begin preparatory work the week of July 6 for the replacement of the Big Bend bridges at Pacific Avenue and Greenwood Boulevard.

Message boards are now in place, and project notification postcards are being mailed to nearby residents and businesses.

Beginning the week of July 13, expect:
• Ramp closures
• Lane closures on Big Bend (mid to late July)

Huge recognition for firefighter Jake Hecht (Maplewood MO Fire Department) This week we presented him with a challenge coin for excellence in overdose response after he revived someone who overdosed then followed up with a conversation and an on-scene referral to an EPICC coach to link them to ongoing treatment and care.
