From ship decks to remote landing zones, the V-22 Osprey brings a unique mix of speed, range and vertical-lift capability to the mission.

At Fleet Readiness Center East, our V-22 aircraft line supports all three variants of the aircraft, which is flown by the U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy and United States Air Force. The Osprey’s tiltrotor design allows it to transition from vertical takeoffs and landings to fast, efficient forward flight—giving the fleet, and our warfighters, flexibility across a wide range of operational environments.

Maintaining that capability takes a coordinated team of skilled artisans, planners, engineers and support personnel. From scheduled maintenance and repairs to inspections and technical support, their combined efforts help return mission-capable aircraft to the fleet.

FRCE is proud to support the people and platforms that keep the mission moving.

'MORE AIRCRAFT, FASTER’: FRCE NEW RIVER LINE DELIVERS V-22S ON TIME, EVERY TIME

At Fleet Readiness Center East's detachment onboard Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina, the V-22 line tasked with performing planned maintenance intervals on Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey aircraft has made an enormous impact on flight line readiness by delivering every aircraft on or ahead of schedule for more than a decade.

Since 2014, the team has maintained a perfect record for on-time deliveries of the transport aircraft they overhaul, returning them to the Marine tiltrotor squadrons who need safe, mission-ready aircraft to support national defense objectives. During this time, more than 97% of the aircraft the team delivered to the fleet have arrived ahead of schedule, with some more than 30% under projected turnaround time.

With more than 75 aircraft worked during this time frame, the impact is clear: “More aircraft, faster: It’s all about giving them back to the fleet,” said Lavon Vance, head of FRCE’s New River V-22 Branch.

While the explanation may sound simple, the work done at New River has a critical, real-world effect said FRCE Commanding Officer Capt. Randy J. Berti.

“The operational impact of the V-22 line at FRC East’s New River detachment cannot be overstated,” Berti said. “These dedicated aircraft maintenance professionals directly enhance flight line readiness by giving our Marines the reliable, mission-ready aircraft they need when they need them. I couldn’t be more proud of this team and the world-class work they do every day in support of the warfighter.”

FRCE EARNS EIGHTH CNO AVIATION SAFETY AWARD
A commitment to flight line safety and efficiency has earned Fleet Readiness Center East recognition from the Chief of Naval Operations with the CNO Aviation Safety Award for fiscal year 2025.

The award, also known as the Navy’s Safety “S,” is presented annually to Navy and Marine Corps aviation units to honor superior operational performance and mishap prevention efforts throughout the fiscal year. Unlike single-winner awards, this recognition is given to multiple commands across the Navy enterprise that meet the rigorous safety and operational standards set by the Naval Safety Command. FRCE became one of just 48 organizations within the Navy chain of command to receive the accolade for 2025, and one of only two within Naval Air Systems Command.

FRCE Commanding Officer Capt. Randy Berti said this accomplishment was made possible by the hard work and dedication of the depot’s workforce coming together in support of the warfighter.

“FRC East’s primary mission is to ensure that our nation’s Marines, Sailors and Airmen are equipped with the safest, most reliable products,” said Berti. “We are committed to maintaining our record of zero flight mishaps and further enhancing our operations through safe practices. Our success is driven by a workforce that has fully embraced our safety management systems, knowing the vital role they play in our nation’s defense. This deep-rooted culture of safety not only protects our people but also guarantees that every aircraft, engine and component we deliver is fully mission-ready, every time.”

✈️ From summer jobs to future careers
More than 50 high school students from nine counties recently wrapped up their summer at Fleet Readiness Center East!

Through FRCE’s Summer Hire Program, students gained paid, hands-on experience supporting the aviation maintenance, repair, overhaul and logistics mission that keeps military aircraft ready to support the warfighter.

Some students worked on the production lines at Cherry Point, New River and Kinston, learning to maintain the H-53 heavy-lift helicopter family; V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft; H-1 light attack and utility helicopters; and the premiere F-35 Lightning II joint strike fighter. Others developed skills in shops servicing blades, dynamic composites and rotor heads, while students in logistics and operations supported the mission in other crucial ways.

For these students, the program was an opportunity to explore aviation careers, build real-world skills and see where their future could take them.

The Summer Hire Program is just one way FRC East invests in the next generation of aviation artisans. Take a look at some of the students in action.

Have you ever seen a jet cross the road? You have now!

Yesterday, a TAV-8B Harrier made its final journey – not through the skies, but down U.S. 70 in the heart of Havelock.

For months, artisans at Fleet Readiness Center East painstakingly restored the aircraft. Once the restoration was complete, another team took on the challenge of moving the Harrier to its new home.

Getting a jet across a highway is no small feat. The team carefully measured every tight part of the route, accounted for the aircraft’s dimensions and surroundings, and even walked alongside the Harrier for the entire trip to make sure it arrived safely.

The TAV-8B, a two-seated training variant of the AV-8B Harrier "jump jet," is now on static display at the Havelock Tourist and Event Center, where it joins decades of Marine aviation history alongside an F-4 Phantom II, A-4 Skyhawk and H-46 Sea Knight helicopter.

For many years, FRCE provided depot-level maintenance for the AV-8B Harrier fleet. That chapter came to a close with the final Harrier delivery to Marine Attack Squadron 223 (VMA-223) in October 2025, ahead of the official sunset of the Marine Corps AV-8B Harrier program in June 2026.

FRCE also has a long history of repairing, restoring and preserving vintage aircraft. And while we may not be quite ready to call the Harrier “vintage,” this aircraft represents another opportunity for our artisans to apply their craftsmanship to preserving the legacy of these legendary aviation platforms and the missions they represent for generations to come.

One of these things is not like the other! 👀
This CH-53E Super Stallion is hanging out with its tiltrotor counterpart inside Fleet Readiness Center East’s V-22 Osprey hangar.

While these two aircraft aren’t typically maintained in the same space, sometimes we must adapt to meet the needs of the fleet. It’s all about getting the job done and keeping our aircraft ready to fly.

FLYBY FRIDAY!
By taking a sheet of metal and turning it into a flight-ready component, Fleet Readiness Center East’s Manufacturing Machine and Welding Shop keeps the fleet moving.

As part of the Metals Branch, these artisans cut, shape, form and weld raw metal into quality replacement parts, providing critical support for every aircraft platform serviced by the depot!

Technology has changed the way the team gets the job done. Laser cutters allow machinists to precisely cut parts that once had to be done by hand, improving the process while maintaining the rigorous quality their work demands.

While this advanced machinery is vital, the shop’s true power lies in the experience and skill of the sheet metal and heat treat workers, machinists and welders working behind the scenes. By producing essential replacement parts in-house, the Manufacturing Machine and Welding Shop helps get aircraft back in the air -- supporting our nation’s warfighters who depend on them.

The right fit starts with the right cut! An artisan in Fleet Readiness Center East's Engine and Dynamic Components Composites Shop refurbishes a V-22 support blade holder, carefully cutting the protective material that will be bonded to the inside of the component. While the material is small, its purpose is critical: protecting the pin that passes through the blade holder and preventing metal-to-metal contact that could lead to wear and damage.
