Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans passed the largest cut to health care in history. Here in Vermont, that means roughly 18,000 people are projected to lose coverage altogether, while 27,000 could see their premiums spike. Democrats have been clear from the start: we want to reverse the cuts, lower costs, and save health care. Meanwhile, Republicans have refused to lift a finger to make health care more affordable. Now, Trump is creating another crisis.
After Trump said, “Don’t even bother dealing with [Democrats],” Republicans shut down the government instead of working to protect Vermonters. Last week, Democrats made our position clear. Leaders Schumer and Jeffries presented a proposal that would have reversed the cuts to Medicaid and ensured Americans’ health premiums don’t go up by an average of 75% in January. The cost of Trump’s billionaire-first tax law is more than 10 times higher than the cost of extending the enhanced ACA premium tax credits.
When Senate Democrats last had the majority for four years, they didn’t have one shutdown. Democrats negotiated all 13 funding bills during that time period with Republicans.
Trump and Republicans will be held responsible by voters for a government shutdown.
