With 2 days before we begin our 50-Day Create Your Own Trail Challenge, we thought it would be a good time to do a little walkthrough of how to log your activities into the event results and track your progress against your 50-day distance goal.
Thank you again for everyone who has signed up, and don't forget for any who haven't, registration is open until October 17th!

Need trail ideas? We've got you covered. How about James S. Long Park right here in Haymarket. Most people know Long Park for the soccer, lacrosse and baseball fields for their kids, but did you know there's 4 miles of trails with a few creek crossings rolling hills and more behind all the sports fields? Check it out as we take you through it.
Temperatures are starting to drop from the summer heat, we've even got some leaves starting to fall, and we're now just 2 weeks out from the start of our Create Your Own Trail - 50-Day Virtual Challenge.

Check out this preview of the Whitney State Forest trails, and don't forget to register now for the Virtual Race Challenge
As we get closer to the start of our Create Your Own Trail virtual challenge, I thought I'd preview some trails around our area to give you some ideas to try out and explore.
First up is Whitney State Forest in Warrenton, Va. which is going to be our newest race in the Twilight Trail Series when we can get back to in-person events. There are 4-5 miles of trails in this quiet/secluded tract managed by the Virginia Department of Forestry. I went out on my bike to show you our new 5K course, plenty elevation changes, 4-5 stream crossings, beautiful trees, definitely one of my favorite trails for a run.
We're Now 5 weeks out from our 50-Day Virtual Race Challenge, so lets highlight our 3rd beneficiary of the event. For any alumni of our Leopold's Trail races, you might know we pride ourselves on that race being dog-friendly, so when we decided to expand this year to do a race in Warrenton, we jumped at the chance to partner with and raise money for the Vint Hill Dog Park.
Piedmont Dogs, a.k.a. the Vint Hill Dog Park, is a non-profit org dedicated to providing a fun and safe off-leash dog recreation area to Virginiaโs Piedmont region. The dog park itself is a fenced in dog park on a partially wooded 1.25 acres, open to the public, and operating year round from dawn to dusk. Learn more about them here: http://www.vinthilldogpark.org/
6 weeks out from our Create Your Own Trail Challenge. Just a reminder that 100% of all proceeds are going to be donated to three great non-profit organizations, and we want to give a shout out to our second beneficiary the Haymarket Elementary School (PTO).
Haymarket PTO is dedicated to providing quality opportunities to enhance and maximize the education of every student while aiding them in achieving their highest potential. Even while schools have had to go virtual and the many normal in person activities aren't possible; the HMES PTO is doing hard work to find/provide access to virtual activities/tools and more for students as they navigate the school year!
Register Now for the virtual race challenge and help us raise money for this great organization!

This is done through a fun & exciting outdoor programs, educational meetings, and through the advancement program. Pack 42 will not only be manning aid stations when we get back to racing in person in 2021, but they also do clean up days for local parks/trails in our area so we have a LOT to thank them for.

There are much more important things going on right now, so we're not gonna do the original email/social media promotional splash we originally planned; instead just gonna say for those interested, Registration is officially open for the Twilight Trail Series. You can sign up here: broadrunoffroad.org
Most importantly, stay safe, stay healthy and stay sane everyone and we'll see you on the trails come fall time.
Long version: Our apologies in advance, this is the dumbest thing we've had to do, but Facebook will not allow us to change the name of this FB page to our new legal name: Broad Run Off Road.
We think it would be very confusing to continue posting about a series of races happening in many locations outside of Leopold's Preserve from a page titled "Leopold's Trail Run"; and we don't want to confuse folks, not to mention its just not our legal name anymore, so we're taking this step now to just create a new proper FB page for Broad Run Off Road.
So please if you don't mind, if you like this page, please like our new page as that will be where we will post all future news, updates and events: https://www.facebook.com/BroadRunOffRoad/
We will keep this old page alive though so all the pictures from our past races stay alive and accessible. Thank you and see you on the trails soon :)
Give people a reason to have fun, be active, outdoors and off pavement.

Leopold's Trail Run
20/02/2020
Ok, enough teasers, its time to start announcing some things for 2020; and we're starting with the biggest news first.
We're expanding!
After 6 years of putting on our annual Leopold's Trail Run, we've decided we wanted to do more. Its been hard to pick just 1 non-profit beneficiary each year, and there's a lot of great trails in our area, so why not do more races and raise more money for great orgs around our community?
Don't worry, the Leopold's Trail race isn't going anywhere, but since we're now expanding beyond the borders of Leopold's Nature Preserve, its time for a name change...
Staying true to our roots we decided to take the stream that parallels Leopold's Preserve, the North Fork Broad Run, and combine that with our preference to stay off the hard asphalt to become: Broad Run, Off Road
So technically a new name, but the same mission that's driven us since day one: fun, active, outdoors and off the pavement with 100% proceeds donated and 100% volunteer supported!
Stay tuned to this space (and our new coming very soon website www.broadrunoffroad.org), in the coming days/weeks as we will very shortly start announcing details for a brand new 2020 Trail Series :)

to our first event in 2014. Leopold's Nature Preserve had just opened the full trails to the public, and a few of us in the neighborhood thought: "wouldn't it be cool to get a group together for a 5K run on the trails."
We mapped out a course, got permission from the trails and the VOP neighborhood where the trailhead is, and just posted on neighborhood FB pages about it, and asked folks if they could to bring a donation for Haymarket Food Bank, just to see how many people were interested... turned out over 100 runners showed up.
That year no fancy electronic timing bibs, race shirts, finisher medals, fall festival or even refreshments as it was just a group run. We had a stack of free race bibs, and just a clock on a tripod at the start/finish line (runners had to look and remember their time as they finished).
Also different back then, we did the race in the morning in November... chilly.
Fast forward to 2019 and over 1000 racers have been on the trails now, and we're looking to cross the $15,000 mark donated to local non-profits.
Now we've got a family fest full of activities, sponsors and vendors, a photo booth, live music, snow cones, race shirts/medals.. oh, and no more need to wake up at the crack of dawn or bundle up for the trails :)
27/08/2019
We're just 2 months away from raceday. Summer is coming to an end, the trails are calling and price increases in 4 days, so make sure you register now to get in at the lower rate.
Be the first to know and let us send you an email when Leopold's Trail Run posts news and promotions. Your email address will not be used for any other purpose, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
Broad Run Off Road was founded in 2014, but not immediately as a multi-race organization, instead it truly began as just a simple group run / get together...
In 2013 a developer in Haymarket Virginia struck a deal with the county to rezone several hundred acres of land within the community, originally zoned for commercial/industrial use, to instead be split into some residential use and for the remainder to become a nature conservancy know as Leopold's Preserve, complete with plans to make several miles of trails within for public access hiking and biking.
As the trails began to take shape in 2014, Allen Wagner, a resident of the area, decided to put together a group run to try out the trails and introduce folks in the community to the new running outlet available. Allen mapped out a 5K course and a simple sign up sheet was created online to track how many people to expect for this first ever "Leopold's Trail 5K."
Word spread so much that with just less than a month's notice from idea to event, on a chilly November morning over 100 runners showed up for this group run on the new trails. There was nothing fancy about it, just some donated race bibs for folks to wear, and just a running clock on a battery at the trailhead so folks could see a time as they returned. Being so close to Thanksgiving, runners were simply asked to bring a non-perishable food item as a donation to the Haymarket Food Pantry, and at least 2 large boxes were filled/donated.
By popular demand, in 2015 it became an official registration / timed event open and advertised to the public, moved to warmer weather amongst the fall foliage in October, and adding a 1-mile fun run. In 2016 a mini family-fest was added, and in 2018 a 10K course. From 2014 to present, two things always stayed the same, the race was always 100% run by volunteers, and 100% of any proceeds collected were donated.
In that short 6-year span the Leopold's event saw over 800 different racers from several regions/states, has been nominated for best annual event by Haymarket Lifestyle, and has raised over $20,000 for local non-profit organizations; not too bad for a simple group run.
As popular demand drove a group run to become an official 5K, and then the additions of a 1-mile fun run and the expansion to have a 10K course; so in 2020 does it bring more expansion, now to multiple races on multiple trails. Since this expansion took us beyond the borders of Leopold's Preserve, it was time for a new name. Staying true to our "Leopold's" roots we took the stream that parallels Leopold's Preserve, the North Fork Broad Run, and combined that with our mission to stay off the hard asphalt: Broad Run, Off Road :)
