My kind of dog

“We got the grass cut for the first time this Spring just two weeks ago. Chalky, as ever, was thrilled by the whole vista of newly-mown, juicy grass and couldn't resist a typical Westie roll around. ❤️❤️❤️”

Fantastic news for North Dakota kids! No-cost school meals – which has had a long journey full of ups and downs – has passed both the ND House & Senate, along with a boost in school funding!!

The original school lunch bill, sponsored by Rep. Laurie Beth Hager, would have provided meals to all kids. The version that passed both chambers today in another bill (SB 2284) provides $6 million for no-cost breakfast and lunch for students from families with incomes of 200% of the federal poverty level (about $60k for a family of four), which is a good start. This will give no-cost meals to an additional 10k kids! SB 2284 is now headed to the governor. In this pic, our school lunch champion LBH is holding a lunch bag decorated by a ND student!

SB 2284 also provides a substantial increase in funding to the per-pupil formula, which are the state funds that support school districts across the state. In my role on the education appropriations committee and the conference committee for SB 2284, I successfully fought for an increase of 4% each year of the upcoming biennium, as well as an increase for special education, to ensure districts can meet the growing needs of our schools.

I was disappointed that the Legislature initially passed this but today the Governor’s veto was rejected by the House. In 2018, residents of Fargo overwhelmingly voted (65%) to utilize approval voting methodology for its local mayor and city commission elections. It concerns me that the ND legislature continues to ignore the will of the people.

In a veto message last week, Gov. Doug Burgum said the approval voting ban represents an “egregious example of state overreach” that “blatantly infringes on local control."

Legislative Day 1B:
We did not gavel in because no bills have been heard in committees. The Joint Education Committee (House& Senate) heard our State of ND Educate Address from the Department of Education officials. Here are some quick highlights ND has 115000 students in our public school system. There are 168 public schools, DPI is staffed by 78 employees who are doing amazing programmatic things for our students. There are 9004 public school teachers in ND and 1150 other specialists and 672 administrators. The DPI budget is about 3 billion dollars including federal moneys. Under the leadership of Superintendent of Publuc Schools Kirsten Baslar, a variety of cutting edge programs are available in our state.

Today my son Andy and husband Pete joined me at the capital. It was another organizational day with brief reports on bills developed from the interim committees and caucus meetings. Still waiting for committee assignments to be finalized.

The voting turn out in ND was down 26 percent this November. During the 67th legislative session several bills were introduced and a package of bills passed that changed the voting procedures for our ND citizens. This is the result: substantially fewer people turned out to vote. Does this data indicate voter suppression? Perhaps.
Prior to Election Day, I was called out by a constituent to show the data after using the term “voter suppression”.
Here it is : ND had a 26% drop in turn out that certainly is a data point. In additional the number of persons who voted early was significantly lower which would seem to be because the number of days for early voting was decreased by the legislature. Finally the decrease to 10 Cass County (population 185,000) voting centers in 2022 from about 30 in previous election cycles was another indicator as it resulted in citizens standing in line up to 90 minutes.
As a state we can and should do better. A 42% voter turn out means than less than half of the eligible voters made the decisions in this election.
Voting should be convenient for our state residents. I believe that the procedures such as the number of days for early voting, voting locations per county/precinct and lack of notification of boundary changes from redistricting all were contributing factors to the voter turn out in 2022.
We can do better North Dakota, our citizens deserve it

Day to Advocate. Today at the state Capitol was Alzheimer’s Advocacy Day. The Governor proclaimed June 16th 2022 as a day to recognize Alzheimer’s and those who provide support and advocate for those diagnosed with it and for their families. It is estimated that over 14000 North Dakotans have Alzheimer’s—one of which had been my mother. The people I am pictured with seem so dedicated and compassionate. Hopefully research efforts will develop treatments to reduce or eliminate the cognitive deterioration associated with Alzheimer’s

Nyemal Dei win a seat on the Fargo School Board. A historic first in Fargo. From the first moment after meeting Nyemal, it I was obvious she was someone special and had so much to offer our schools and our community. Nyemal ‘s compassion, her personal journey, and steadfast drive to achieve her goals is an inspiration. I am blessed that she is my friend.
