BRIEF HISTORY OF THE NIGERIAN AIR FORCE

The idea of establishing an air force for Nigeria was first mooted in 1961 following the nation's participation in peace-keeping operations in Congo and Tanganyika (now Tanzania). The Nigerian Government at the time, no doubt, recognized the urgent need to establish an air force actively supported by modern facilities to provide full complement of forces to

enhance the nation's military posture. Early in 1962, the Government agreed in principle that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) be established. The Nigerian Parliament, therefore, approved the establishment of the NAF and recruitment of cadets commenced in June 1962. Consequently, the NAF was officially established by a statutory Act of Parliament in April 1964 to serve four main purposes namely:
a. To achieve a full complement of the military defence system of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, both in the air and on the ground. To ensure a fast versatile mobility of the Armed Forces. c. To provide close support for the ground-based and sea borne forces in all phases of operations and to ensure the territorial integrity of a united Nigeria. d. To give the country the deserved prestige that is invaluable in international matters. It was in 1962 that the drive for the required manpower for the planned air force started. Simultaneous with this development, Government was in dialogue with some friendly nations on the possibility of training Nigerian Air Force personnel in various specialist fields. The first batch of 10 cadets was enlisted in 1962 to undergo training with the Ethiopian Air Force. The second set of 16 cadets was enlisted in February 1963 to undergo training with the Royal Canadian Air Force while six cadets were sent to the Indian Air Force. The stage was thus set for the training of its personnel in the country. Consequently, several countries were approached but the lot fell on the German Air Force to provide technical assistance for the local training of NAF personnel and this materialized in 1963. While the NAF was still at its infancy as a fighting force, the laudable plans made by the German Air Force Assistance Group were prematurely put to test barely three years after its establishment. The inexperienced Air Force assumed the role of a well established Air Force in order to prosecute the Nigerian civil war in close collaboration with sister Services. At this stage of its existence, the NAF was only equipped with a few aircraft. As the war progressed, some fighter aircraft such as MIG 15 and 17 were acquired to help bring the war to a speedy end. The Nigerian Civil War came to an end in 1970 and there was the need to re-organize the Nigerian Air Force and up-grade its equipment. In order to strengthen itself, the NAF between 1981 and 1990 acquired additional aircraft types of advanced technology. With the acquisition of new weapon platforms, there was a need to train personnel to man and maintain the new aircraft types. This led to the re-organisation of training in all aspects of NAF specialties. Following the expansion of the NAF over time and the need to enforce all international laws and conventions relating to space activities in the Nigerian airspace, the Federal Government promulgated Decree 105 (Armed Forces Amendment Decree) on 23rd August 1994 which provided additional roles for the NAF. These additional roles include:
a. Enforcing and assisting in coordinating the enforcement of international laws, conventions, practices and customs ascribed and acceded to by Nigeria relating to aerial or space activities in the Nigerian airspace. Coordinating and enforcing all national and international air laws acceded or ascribed to by Nigeria and
c. Delineating, demarcating and coordinating all aerial surveys and security zones of the Nigerian airspace.

BALANCING LETHALITY WITH RESPONSIBILITY: AIR COMPONENT HADIN KAI COMPLETES IHL TRAINING

In line with the Nigerian Air Force's commitment to conducting operations with professionalism and respect for humanitarian principles, the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI, in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has concluded a three-day International Humanitarian Law (IHL) training for its personnel in Maiduguri. The training, held from 2 to 4 June 2026, provided officers, airmen and airwomen with practical instruction on International Humanitarian Law, Rules of Engagement and Civilian Harm Mitigation measures.

The programme was designed to enhance personnel's capacity to effectively execute assigned missions while safeguarding civilian lives and property. This initiative reflects the vision of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, whose leadership continues to emphasise operational effectiveness, accountability, purposeful lethality and civilian harm mitigation as essential pillars of Nigerian Air Force operations.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Air Component Commander, Air Commodore MB Ahmed, commended the ICRC team led by Mrs Diana Djaparidze for their support and expertise. He noted that the training would further strengthen personnel professionalism and compliance with humanitarian laws during ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations. As Operation HADIN KAI continues to degrade terrorist capabilities in the North-East, the Nigerian Air Force remains steadfast in ensuring that operational success is achieved within the framework of national and international legal standards, demonstrating that military effectiveness and humanitarian responsibility are mutually reinforcing.

CIVILIAN HARM MITIGATION ENHANCES PRECISION, ACCOUNTABILITY AND MISSION SUCCESS — CAS

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability and the protection of civilians with the successful conduct of its maiden Seminar on Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response (CHMR) for strategic-level officers at Headquarters NAF, Abuja, on 2 June 2026. The landmark engagement, which brought together an array of senior military officers, security stakeholders, policy experts, civil society representatives, journalists and subject-matter experts, was aimed at strengthening institutional understanding of civilian protection considerations in contemporary military operations. Declaring the seminar open, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, described the initiative as a significant milestone in the NAF's efforts to enhance operational effectiveness while upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability.

Air Marshal Aneke emphasised that the NAF remains steadfast in its resolve to institutionalise Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response across all levels of operations, noting that public trust and confidence remain essential to lasting operational success. According to the CAS, "Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response is not a constraint on our operational effectiveness; rather, it is a framework that enhances precision, improves decision-making and ultimately preserves strategic legitimacy." He further stressed that operational success in today's complex security environment must be measured not only by mission accomplishments but also by the extent to which civilian lives and property are protected, adding that civilian protection considerations enhance mission effectiveness through informed decision-making, accountability and operational discipline.

In his welcome address, the Chief of Civil-Military Relations (CCMR), Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, described the seminar as a landmark initiative in the Nigerian Air Force's ongoing efforts to strengthen professionalism, accountability and civilian protection in military operations. He noted that modern military operations require a delicate balance between mission accomplishment and humanitarian considerations, particularly in environments where civilians are often present. According to the CCMR, "Operational success is not defined solely by tactical achievements, but by the ability to conduct operations with precision, discipline, restraint and utmost regard for the safety, dignity and wellbeing of civilian populations within areas of operation." The seminar provided a platform for knowledge sharing, professional reflection and constructive dialogue on best practices aimed at further strengthening the NAF's commitment to operational excellence, civilian protection and mission success.

NAF EARNS INTERNATIONAL COMBAT MEDICAL TRAINING ACCREDITATION, ENHANCES OPERATIONAL READINESS

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), in collaboration with the German Technical Advisory Group (GTAG), has achieved a significant milestone in combat medical capability following the accreditation of the Air Mobile First Aid Unit (AMFAU) of the Nigerian Air Force School of Medical Sciences and Aviation Medicine (NAFSMSAM), Kaduna, by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT), USA. The achievement was marked by the successful conduct of the first-ever NAEMT-accredited Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) training in Nigeria, positioning AMFAU among a select group of accredited NAEMT training centres in West Africa and reinforcing the NAF's commitment to developing world-class combat medical capabilities.

The Tactical Combat Casualty Care programme is globally recognised as the gold standard in battlefield medicine, equipping personnel with critical lifesaving skills required to manage trauma and medical emergencies in operational environments. The training reflects the NAF's commitment to international best practices and comes at a time when the Service remains actively engaged in counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism and other joint military operations across the country. By strengthening combat medical expertise, the NAF is enhancing force protection, operational resilience and mission effectiveness while improving its capacity to support both operational and humanitarian contingencies.

Speaking on the achievement, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, described the accreditation and successful conduct of the inaugural TCCC course as a strategic advancement in the Nigerian Air Force's drive towards operational excellence. NAF SPECIAL FORCES RAISE THE BAR: ONLY THE FITTEST ADVANCE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST TERRORISM

For the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), operational success begins with rigorous training and uncompromising standards. On 30 May 2026, the Regiment Training Centre Annex (RTCA) Bauchi conducted the final Physical Fitness Test for trainees of Special Forces Course 13/2026 in a demonstration of the Service's unwavering commitment to building an elite and combat-ready force. The assessment formed a critical phase of the selection process, challenging trainees through a series of intense physical and mental evaluations designed to identify those possessing the endurance, resilience, discipline and fighting spirit required for Special Forces operations. The exercise underscores the NAF's determination to sustain a highly capable force prepared to confront terrorism and other emerging security threats in complex operational environments.

The final Physical Fitness Test highlights the Nigerian Air Force's relentless drive to produce mission-ready personnel capable of supporting ongoing counter-terrorism and internal security operations across the country. It also reflects the vision of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, who has consistently emphasized realistic training as the foundation of operational success. Reaffirming this commitment, the CAS stated: "The security challenges confronting our nation demand personnel who are physically robust, mentally resilient and operationally decisive. Through realistic training and uncompromising standards, the Nigerian Air Force will continue to produce Special Forces operators capable of taking the fight to the enemy and defending Nigeria's sovereignty wherever duty calls." Through initiatives such as this, the NAF continues to strengthen its operational capability and maintain a force ready to dominate the battlespace in defence of the nation.

Earlier, speaking during the exercise, the Commandant of RTCA Bauchi, Squadron Leader Edeama Lawrence Akpan, stated that the assessment was designed to ensure that only trainees who demonstrate exceptional physical fitness, determination and operational readiness continue on the course. He emphasized that Special Forces personnel are routinely called upon to undertake demanding missions under austere and hostile conditions, making rigorous training and high standards indispensable. Throughout the exercise, trainees displayed remarkable grit, perseverance and mental toughness as they strove to meet the exacting requirements expected of future Special Forces operators.
