Central Virginia Public Information Network The Unified Source of Regional Information

Beginning in July of 2006, regional Public Health and Safety Planners and Public Information Officers from Amherst County, Appomattox County, Bedford County, City of Bedford, Campbell County, and the City of Lynchburg began meeting to address emergency planning and information disemination in the event of a regional crisis. As a result, public information officers from these localities, along with

Virginia’s Region 2000 Partnership, Centra, Areva, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the Virginia Department of Health, the American Red Cross, the Lynchburg Amateur Radio Club, and Lynchburg City Schools merged to form the Central Virginia Public Information Network (CVPIN). This group meets regularly to address regional communication issues and to support local emergency planners as they effectively prepare and train for potential crises in the Central Virginia area.

Hey Lynchburg! Here are some safety tips for shoveling snow:

1. Warm Up First – Before heading outside, do some light stretching or a quick warm-up to prepare your muscles for the activity.

2. Dress in Layers – Wear warm, moisture-wicking clothing in layers to keep yourself comfortable. Don’t forget gloves, a hat, and waterproof boots with good traction.

3. Use the Right Shovel – A lightweight, ergonomic snow shovel can help reduce strain on your back and make shoveling easier.

4. Lift Properly – Bend at the knees and lift with your legs instead of your back. Avoid twisting your torso while throwing snow.

5. Push Instead of Lifting – Whenever possible, push the snow rather than lifting it to minimize strain on your body.

6. Take Breaks – Shoveling snow is physically demanding, so take frequent breaks to rest and hydrate, especially if you start to feel tired or out of breath.

7. Stay Hydrated – Even in cold weather, your body needs water. Drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after shoveling.

8. Be Aware of Ice – Watch for hidden ice patches that could cause slips and falls. Spread salt or sand to improve traction.

9. Know Your Limits – If you have a heart condition or other health concerns, consult your doctor before shoveling. Stop immediately if you feel chest pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath.

10. Clear Snow Early and Often – Shovel multiple times during snowfall to prevent snow from piling up and becoming too heavy to move.

Following these guidelines can help keep you safe and injury-free while clearing snow. Stay safe, Lynchburg!
