Newport News VA CASA CASAs are volunteers trained and appointed by the Juvenile Court to advocate for the best interest of abused and neglected children.

230 25th Street Newport News, VA 23607

A CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) is professionally trained and appointed by the Juvenile Court to advocate for the best interest of children who have been abused and/or neglected. By working alongside attorneys, social workers and other professionals, CASAs expedite permanency ensuring that children do not linger in the foster care system. CASAs ens

ure that the child’s best interests are well represented at every stage in a case by completing an extensive, independent review of the child’s case. All CASAs must:
• Demonstrate commitment to the organization’s philosophy of skilled volunteer advocacy.
• Conduct interviews with the child and relevant parties (birth family, foster parents, extended family members, GAL/other attorneys, social workers, school officials, doctors, therapists, etc.) to obtain detailed facts about the case.
• Document progress with the case plan, compliance with court mandated services, services for the child, and obtain vital records such as psychological evaluations, substance abuse treatment, medical and school records on the child and/or parent.
• Ensure that the judicial and child welfare systems are moving expeditiously to secure a safe, permanent home for the child.
• Identify resources that will assist with healthy family development and facilitate reunification or alternative permanency for the child (i.e. placement with relatives, adoption).
• Communicate the needs of the child by submitting a detailed and child-centered Court Report with recommendations on what is in their best interest. If this is something you believe in and feel that you can contribute, follow the like to email our office and begin your journey!!
