Daily case counts are now higher than they were at any point last winter, though the majority of hospitalizations are happening in people who are unvaccinated. A new report shows that the COVID-19 vaccine is safe during pregnancy. Take a look at the report below!

A recent MMWR which analyzed more than 40,000 pregnancies, adds to the evidence that COVID-19 vaccination is safe during pregnancy. This report found that COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy did not increase the risk for preterm birth or delivering a baby born small-for-gestational-age.

During the week of December 18, the most recent week posted at https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/coronavirus/see-the-numbers/covid-19-in-virginia/covid-19-cases-by-vaccination-status/, unvaccinated Virginians developed COVID-19 infections at a rate of 9.5 times that of fully vaccinated Virginians. They also were hospitalized at a rate 10.8 times higher and died of COVID-19 at a rate 9.9 times higher than fully vaccinated Virginians.
While critically important, no one measure will keep us safe from COVID-19 and prevent transmission to those around us at high risk of dying if infected.
In addition to vaccination, indoor mask usage, social distancing, staying home when sick, and getting tested are critically important as we get through this winter surge.

Tools to Fight Omicron

The Omicron variant is here, and people are concerned about breakthrough cases. The CDC data show that those who are vaccinated and boosted are far less likely to get seriously ill from Omicron than those who are not. Please, now is the time: get yourself vaccinated and boosted. Vaccines, masking and social distancing will help to protect us from Omicron, but we need to pull together. It's time. Don't wait.
