NEVIS CRICKET ACADEMY OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED
Equipment Distributed to Schools: An Investment in the Future of Nevisian Cricket
CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS — In a landmark moment for cricket and youth development on the island of Nevis, the Nevis Cricket Academy was officially launched today, accompanied by the distribution of cricket equipment to primary schools across the island. The occasion marks a significant step forward in the Nevis Island Administration’s commitment to nurturing talent, building character, and developing well-rounded young citizens.
The Nevis Cricket Academy has been founded on a vision that extends well beyond the cricket pitch. While the Academy is committed to producing outstanding cricketers capable of competing at the highest levels of the sport, its ultimate purpose is the holistic development of young people — shaping individuals of strong character, discipline, leadership, and resilience.
This vision is anchored in the core philosophy of the Ministry of Sports: “Developing Champions in Sport and Life.” It is this principle that will guide every aspect of the Academy — from coaching methodology and academic support to personal development and community engagement. The Academy believes that the values cultivated on the cricket field — teamwork, discipline, perseverance, respect, and excellence — are the very foundations upon which exceptional lives are built.
Director of Sports, Mr. Aljay Newton, provided a comprehensive overview of the Academy’s structure, goals, and operational framework at the launch ceremony. Mr. Newton outlined the Department of Sports approach to player development, and the mandate of the coaching staff, and the Academy’s integration with the broader sporting vision and mission of the Nevis Island Administration.
The Honourable Troy Liburd, Minister with responsibility for Education, Youth & Sports, delivered an endorsement of the Academy’s vision and officially declared the Nevis Cricket Academy open. Minister Liburd underscored the Administration’s belief that investment in young people through sport is one of the most powerful tools available for nation building.
“This Academy represents our Administration’s steadfast belief in the potential of every Nevisian child. We are not simply opening a cricket academy today — we are opening doors of opportunity, discipline, and aspiration. When we speak of developing champions in sport and life, we mean it in the fullest sense. Today is a proud day for Nevis”
Also at the Academy’s launch, Minister Liburd officially distributed cricket equipment to primary schools across Nevis. This initiative ensures that every school has the tools necessary to introduce and sustain cricket activity within the school environment, removing barriers to participation, and laying out the groundwork for the Academy’s recruitment pipeline. All schools will receive equipment including gear bag, bats, helmets, batting & keeping gloves, batting & keeping pads, and abdomen guards among other things. Minister Liburd emphasized the significance of the equipment distribution as a demonstration of the Administration’s commitment to ensuring that access to cricket is not a privilege, but a right afforded to every child on the island of Nevis.
The launch of the Nevis Cricket Academy signals a new era in sports development on the island. With a clearly defined structure, committed leadership, and a philosophy rooted in the development of the whole person, the Academy is poised to become a cornerstone institution in Nevisian life for generations to come.
