NZ First needs a lesson in Democracy 101.

Shane Jones talks as if 10% of the vote gives NZ First a mandate to rewrite the rules governing the Waitangi Tribunal. It doesn’t.

NZ First won support from about one in ten voters. That’s not a mandate for sweeping constitutional change. National and ACT didn’t campaign for a mandate to weaken the Waitangi Tribunal Act either. Voters were never asked to endorse these changes at the ballot box.

A coalition agreement is a political compromise between parties. It is not a blank cheque to force through divisive policies that were never put to the public.

Democracy isn’t about the loudest minority holding the government to ransom. It’s about respecting the mandate voters actually gave—not inventing one after the election.
